Process Engineer Job Description

SAKUU, an emerging additive manufacturing (AM) technology company based in the San Jose Bay Area, is developing a proprietary high-volume 3D printing technology for building high-performing dry electrodes.

We seek a highly skilled and motivated process engineer to support the process and equipment development. The process engineer will be part of highly motivated and collaborative engineers to develop proprietary high-volume 3D printing and additive manufacturing technology to fabricate high-performance electrodes.

In addition, there will be ample opportunity to learn new experimental skills and participate in cutting-edge hardware design and materials research. This position is full-time and based in San Jose, CA.

To support our mission to reimagine the manufacturing process, you will join our Additive Manufacturing team to craft the operational procedures for developing the state-of-the-art additive manufacturing platform.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development and optimization of novel battery manufacturing processes, from concept to large-scale production, to enhance performance, reduce costs, and meet throughput requirements
  • Develop and maintain project schedules for critical component developments, ensuring alignment with key milestones
  • Design and execute experimental plans across various scales using structured statistical and engineering methodologies with thorough documentation and reporting
  • Identify inefficiencies in existing processes, implement corrective actions, and develop quality control for materials and manufacturing processes
  • Adhere to all safety procedures, including handling hazardous chemicals, and comply with company policies and regulatory standards

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, or material engineering. MS degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with battery electrode manufacturing, equipment development, battery material handling, quality assurance, or related field, preferably in a production environment
  • Strong communication and analytical skills with hands-on mindset to tackle complex engineering challenges
  • Self-driven with the ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Must be a team player with great verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree with 7+ years of related experience in the battery manufacturing industry
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new challenges and drive innovation in process development
  • Strong communication skills, capable of presenting technical information clearly to diverse audiences
  • Experience with project management tools for planning and tracking work effectively
  • Six Sigma certification (Green/Black Belt) is highly desirable
  • Material characterization knowledge and experience (SEM, TGA, DSC, BET, XRD, rheology…)
  • Experience with cell assembly processes and inspection techniques
  • Experience in scaling up processes for industrial applications
