About Us

Toolkit Tutors is a high-impact tutoring company dedicated to helping students master academic content while developing the study skills they need for long-term success. We provide in-person, small-group tutoring for NYC public schools, specializing in Social Studies, English Language Arts (ELA), and Mathematics.

The Job

We are looking for a bilingual (Spanish-English) high school Social Studies tutor to work in-person with small groups of students (1-4 students per group) at a high school in the Bronx. Students need support in Global History and U.S. History, with a focus on historical analysis, essay writing, and Regents exam preparation.

Our tutoring model emphasizes structured, skill-building instruction to help students improve both academically and in their ability to study effectively.

Tutors will work in person on Saturdays from March 22 to June 14, 2025, providing 4 hours of instruction per day at a rate of $35/hour.

Responsibilities
  • Provide engaging, structured Social Studies instruction in small-group settings.
  • Support students in core historical skills, including primary and secondary source analysis, critical thinking, and argument-based writing.
  • Adapt instruction to Spanish-speaking students as needed, using bilingual explanations and scaffolding techniques.
  • Help students prepare for the Global and U.S. History Regents exams by reinforcing key historical themes, essay structures, and document-based question (DBQ) strategies.
  • Integrate study skills strategies (e.g., note-taking from historical texts, organizing essay outlines, managing time during exams) into sessions.
  • Take daily attendance using a personal device (mobile phone) or a school-issued laptop.
  • Communicate professionally with school staff and Toolkit Tutors leadership.

Requirements

We are looking for tutors who meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (completed, or close to completion showing strong academic performance).
  • At least one year of experience teaching or tutoring in a school or educational setting.
  • Experience working with urban school communities and an understanding of the challenges students face.
  • Strong content knowledge in Global and U.S. History.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English (spoken and written).
  • Punctual, reliable, and committed to student success.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage students effectively.
  • Ability to commute to the school location in the Bronx.
  • DOE fingerprint clearance strongly preferred.
Benefits
  • Pay Rate of $35 per hour
  • Paid sick leave
  • Paid training and PD opportunities
