Incumbent serves as Aquatics and Ice Rink Assistant Director for the Mishawaka Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for supervising and directing assigned personnel and assisting Director in managing aquatic and ice rink facilities, programs, and functions.

**DUTIES:**
  • Assists Director in managing assigned facilities, programs, and functions, and ensuring that high program standards are followed. Assists in planning, organizing, and supervising facility activities, including renovations, capital outlays, special projects, and routine maintenance.
  • Supervises and directs assigned personnel, including interviewing candidates and making hiring recommendations, providing orientation and training, planning/delegating/controlling work assignments, developing/mentoring/motivating staff, and maintaining discipline and recommending corrective action.
  • Manages aquatic programming for pool including public swim, classes, swim meets, rentals, swim lessons, lap swimming, and other aquatic programs as developed and assigned.
  • Manages filtration and other aquatic systems and maintains proper pool chemical balance, reporting to Health Department as required. Assists in collecting water samples and administering water testing, and monitors water quality with test kit and calibration of pool controllers.
  • Performs regular safety inspections of pool, rink, and equipment to reduce hazards and provide maximum safety to patrons, following OSHA safety regulations and State pool regulations. Assists in maintaining maintenance program record and inventory of potentially hazardous materials.
  • Manages all aspects of ice rink, including, but not limited to, public skate, special events, rentals, and other programs as developed and assigned.
  • Assists in reviewing checklists with Director for startup and shutdown of seasonal operations.
  • Reorders and restocks concessions, office, and operational products and supervises the procurement of necessary supplies.
  • Works on equipment as qualified in small confined spaces. Assists sub-contractors in completion of work where appropriate.
  • Assists in marketing facility in appropriate venues to increase customer base and revenue.
  • Assists in surveying patrons and evaluating programs to determine public needs and how to increase program efficiency and effectiveness. Receives patron complaints and suggestions and responds appropriately.
  • Assists in coordinating group programs such as exhibitions, meets, and competitions.
  • Performs snow removal and plowing, as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
**I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:**
  • High school diploma or HSE with two (2) years of directly-related aquatics experience, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification.
  • Ability to meet all hiring requirements including passage of a drug screening.
  • Practical knowledge of Department programs and services, with strong time management, organizational, pu lic relations, communication, and management/leadership skills.
  • Practical knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department safety policies and procedures and applicable OSHA safety policies and procedures.
  • Practical knowledge of basic mechanics and familiarity with electrical, plumbing, pool, and refrigeration systems.
  • Working knowledge of standard office policies and procedures with computer skills including word processing/spreadsheet/presentation/email/internet and Department-specific software/ systems, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
  • Working knowledge of basic filing systems and ability to create and maintain Department files and records.
  • Working knowledge of basic budgeting/bookkeeping/accounting practices with ability to manage a strict budget.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, with ability to prepare documents, correspondence, and detailed reports.
  • Ability to supervise and direct assigned personnel, including interviewing candidates and making hiring recommendations, providing orientation and training, planning/delegating/controlling work assignments, developing/mentoring/motivating staff, and maintaining discipline and recommending corrective action.
  • Ability to assist with development of long-range plans and accurately evaluate work accomplished.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other City/County/ State departments and agencies, vendors, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/difficult persons.
  • Ability to read/interpret detailed building prints/sketches/layouts/specifications/maps, plan/layout assigned work projects, and apply knowledge of people and locations.
  • Ability to properly operate standard office equipment, including telephone, computer, scanner, copier, and calculator.
  • Ability to operate various hand/power tools including, but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, air compressor, ratchet, snow blower, mop, and broom.
