Physician, Director of Adult Medicine

Overview:

Assist the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in their duties and lead the Adult Medicine department in a manner that is consistent with the Clinic’s mission and values and adheres to its policies and procedures.

This position works as a member of a care team to coordinate patient care and support patients and families in self-management, self-efficacy, and behavior change. Care team members are expected to assess and manage the patient population’s health needs and communicate effectively with all patients, especially vulnerable populations.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, this individual’s primary responsibilities are to:

  • Provide direct patient medical care that supports PCC values, meets community and PCC standards of care, and uses resources efficiently.
  • Ensure that department policies and procedures reflect best practices and standards of care.
  • Ensure that supervision of Physicians, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), and Physician Assistants (PAs) in the department includes chart reviews, annual evaluations, timely feedback, and career development.
  • Work with the CMO and Chief Operating Officer (COO) to set productivity goals for the department and develop realistic plans to achieve those goals.
  • Work with the CMO, Clinical Quality Manager, and clinical analytics team to set quality assurance/improvement goals for the department and develop realistic plans to achieve those goals.
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, work processes, and patient care. Establish, support, and promote programmatic efforts to improve and maintain patient health, clinic efficiencies, and an interdisciplinary work environment, including attending and organizing appropriate clinic and external meetings.
  • Work with the Health Information Systems team to ensure workflows are integrated into the EHR system.
  • Represent the department’s interests to other members of the medical management team, senior leadership, and other clinic departments.
  • Support implementation of clinic goals, priorities, and policies in the medical department.
  • Work with Human Resources, the CMO, and the COO to set staffing goals for providers in the department. Work with HR, the Chief Clinical Services Officer (CCSO), and the COO to set staffing goals for nursing, medical assistants, and other support staff.
  • Work with the Population Health Department to formulate and implement risk stratification, care coordination, and population-level care for patients in the department by providing clinical background and provider perspectives.
  • Create a positive and supportive environment within the team and across departments.
  • Work with the Departmental Operations Manager to ensure provider availability for patient care and adequate backup for APRNs and PAs.
  • Work with the Departmental Operations Manager to provide clinical input for template changes and productivity goals.
  • Coordinate medical education for the department.
  • Support the organization-wide commitment to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Work with HR to set capacity goals for the number of trainees and volunteers in the department and be aware of department trainees and volunteers.
  • With the COO and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), participate in developing the budget for the department and meeting annual budgetary goals.
  • Adhere to HIPAA guidelines.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited medical school and completion of an appropriate post-graduate training program.

Experience:

  • Minimum of four years’ work experience in a clinic or multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Experience and familiarity with providing best practices in primary care for adults, including chronic disease management, women’s health, and evaluation of acute concerns.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of current theory and practice of medicine for adult patients.
  • Understanding and application of knowledge of healthcare systems.
  • Strong team player with proven leadership and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively with persons of varying ages, genders, abilities, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • English fluency, second language preferred.

Certificate/License: Current license to practice medicine in the State of Texas; Drug Enforcement Agency certification; board certification in family medicine or internal medicine.
