Boys Hope Girls Hope of Detroit has part-time Residential Counselor’s position available. Alternating Weekend AM, PM and Midnight Shifts - Friday through Sunday.
  • Must be prepared to stay awake all night to monitor scholars per licensing requirements.

General Description:
The Residential Counselor supports the Mission and Values of Boys Hope Girls Hope. The Residential Counselor is responsible for supporting and facilitating the operations of the home to create a family atmosphere that supports the development of the full child.

The Residential Counselor is part of a team of professionals and volunteers. They perform their duties relatively free from direct supervision, always acting in a professional manner.

Major Responsibilities: Child Development and Health

  1. Know and follow Boys Hope Girls Hope program policies and procedures regarding the care and development of program participants (scholars)
  2. Assume responsibility for scholars in residence, including daily decisions regarding health, behavioral management, safety, and discipline
  3. In collaboration with the entire program team, work to nurture and guide healthy physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and academic development of scholars living in the home, in accordance with individual scholar service plans and Boys Hope Girls Hope program policies
  4. Daily complete all required documentation for scholar and house files, including appointments, logs, medications
  5. Develop and maintain parent and/or guardian relationships and involvement in their child’s life and the program
  6. Implement various programs, assessments, and curricula to prepare students for transitions, employment, summer programming, college, and independent living
Household Management
  1. Assure that home functions in accordance with the Boys Hope Girls Hope program and local licensing standards
  2. Maintain the home in a clean and safe condition, providing for nutritional and physical needs of scholars
  3. Ensure that scheduled and necessary maintenance occurs on all program property and vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years of experience working with adolescents or in a residential setting.
Ability to take direction, follow the program’s model of parenting and child development programming, abide by house rules and guidelines, support multiple projects, initiate next steps, and consistently meet deadlines.
Ability to work alternating evening and weekend hours as needed to facilitate program activities.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills Professional demeanor, appearance, and strong work ethic.
Able to meet stated programmatic goals.
Computer proficiency with the ability to use word processing, e-mail, and internet applications.
Ability to cultivate strong and lasting relationships with scholars, staff, volunteers, stakeholders, donors, and community members.
High School Diploma required or (optional) bachelor's degree in social service or related field preferred.

Must have valid State of Michigan driver’s license and pass state background checks and other screening.

Expected hours: 25 – 30 per week
