Electrical Field Engineer Intern - San Diego

Overview:

Shimmick is actively seeking a highly motivated Electrical Field Engineer Intern for employment in our Electrical Division. Location is to be determined, but will be in Sourthern California. Expected start is May or June, 2025 with an end date in August or September pending the academic schedules.

Electrical Division

Since the early 1990s, Shimmick has been self-performing electrical scopes for infrastructure projects. Shimmick offers electrical, instrumentation, and process controls expertise for water and wastewater treatment; dams and locks; mass transit and rail; alternative energy; power generation and transmission; and commercial building projects.

Our ability to self-perform this specialty work offers additional value and enables us to better control cost and schedule for projects with major electrical and process mechanical scopes. Our clients include municipalities, water districts, sanitation districts, transit agencies, private developers, DOTs, and USACE.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing assignments that require the application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria’s to carry out engineering tasks. Assignments are designed to further develop judgment and understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  • Exercising judgment limited to developing details of work in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives
  • Preparing engineering related calculations and developing drawings and visual aids
  • Assisting with field inspections to evaluate the work performed and materials used
  • Assisting with construction administration and documentation of deficiencies and deviations from plans
  • Working under supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member
  • Researching and compiling project information for reporting, marketing, and funding requests
  • Creating and maintaining centralized files for project records (including digital)
  • Coordinating logistics and meetings for Vice President and project managers
  • Attending and taking minutes for the development team as requested
  • Helping in the preparation of reports, including monthly development reports
  • Assisting with community outreach duties as needed
  • Attending neighborhood, community, and project meetings
  • Undertaking tasks as may be assigned by the Vice President or project managers
  • Having a clear understanding of the budget and assist in the creation of and adherence to project and development budgets

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program pursing a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or related field with the intent to continue enrollment after an internship.
  • Must have completed 2 years of study

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Capable of using spreadsheet, word processing and standard office software
  • Basic knowledge of industry standard computer software for the position (examples include software such as CADD, HCS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, GIS, Hydrologic/Hydraulic models)
  • A university student that has more than one year of school remaining before earning a degree preferred, these students typically are Freshmen, Sophomores, or Juniors in university. Successful Interns may be eligible to return for additional internships
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite
  • strong problem-solving skills and consistent attention to detail
  • Ability to manage changing deadlines and work well under pressure for multiple team leaders
  • Work independently and effectively to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills

Additional Information:

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.
  • The salary range for this position is between $25.00 - 26.00 per hour depending on experience and/or education.
  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States Work Authorization.
