The Safety Specialist, Laboratory coordinates laboratory safety activities, assists laboratory personnel and staff, and implements laboratory safety policies of the Hackensack Meridian Health Center for Discovery and Innovation Health and Safety program with the intention of providing a safe and effective laboratory environment.

Responsibilities:

A day in the life of a Safety Specialist, Laboratory at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Assist laboratory personnel in all issues involving laboratory health and safety; including training, risk assessment, auditing and emergency response issues.
  • Conduct laboratory safety inspections within varying laboratory environments.
  • Develop and provide laboratory safety training.
  • Provide safety recommendations and corrective actions to foster a safe and effective laboratory environment.
  • Assess laboratory accidents and provide guidance and support for any corrective measures.
  • Perform comprehensive risk assessments for work with hazardous materials within the laboratory environment.
  • Develop, establish and enforce institutional policies in regards to laboratory safety.
  • Perform accident investigations and work with researchers to correct hazards and improve laboratory procedures.
  • Provide emergency laboratory response, which may include response on weekends and after regular business hours.
  • Lifts a minimum of 60 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 80 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.

Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Health Sciences or Safety Management.
  • Must have a functional knowledge of hazards within the laboratory environment.
  • Must communicate and work cooperatively with personnel throughout the laboratory research environment.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Certification in environmental safety and health, occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or hospital safety.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
