Summary:

The Training Specialist I / Optical Laboratory Specialist will support for the instruction of the Optical Laboratory Specialist Program (2 course iterations, at 23 weeks, three days long with 5-30 students per iteration). 18 classes per course iteration where classes range from 7 hours to 175 hours, with tasks including planning, developing, monitoring, assisting, conducting training, and providing subject-matter expertise.

Specific objectives are to assist in the development of accurate and effective instructional and technical support materials, achieve student success through the conduct of the training, doctrine review, and provide accurate and timely technical information and support to leadership.

The instructor will deliver 40 hours teaching and assist with performance evaluations and testing per iteration to assess students’ knowledge and skill development per week. Curriculum delivery will provide a basic knowledge of ophthalmic optics, ocular anatomy and physiology, lens design, clinical procedures, pharmaceutical agents, optical laboratory supply and administration, basic equipment maintenance and repair, and optical laboratory procedures sufficient to fabricate and dispense prescription eyewear in both fixed and field environments.

Training objectives are achieved through lecture, group activities, demonstration, hands-on instruction, and laboratory practical exercises. Assists with activities to maintain program accreditation. American Board of Opticianry certification required to maintain program accreditation.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Instructors plan and provide student instruction in accordance with approved curriculum guidelines and required program standards.
  • Tasks pertaining to general course administration include student/academic counseling, test or assignment administration and grading, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Teaches assigned classes according to approved course syllabi.
  • Utilizes appropriately challenging coursework to help students realize their full potential as learners.
  • Provides students with verbal and/or written expectations, e.g., syllabi, policies, assignment instructions, graded evaluations.
  • Administers and evaluates tests/assessments which are appropriate to course content.
  • Maintains an appropriate learning and assessment climate in the classroom, whether traditional, web, or distance, which encourages the free exchange of ideas while defending academic honesty and objectivity.
  • Effectively able to advise students. Prepares adequately for class and arrives promptly at class meetings, labs, and any other scheduled instructional activities.
  • Delivers material in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Addresses student concerns, i.e., comments, questions, and input, both in class and via office hours, timely electronic communication, and other suitable means. Implements assigned instructional didactic and laboratory activities.
  • Assists with activities to maintain program accreditation.
  • Submits schedule in a timely manner to the program director before each pay period.
  • Maintains effective relationships with professional counterparts throughout the program.
  • Conduct classroom and laboratory instruction (i.e., teach) of any/all lesson topics in the courses using the approved course materials and methods that are likely to ensure that students meet established learning objectives.
  • Assist in development, set up, administer, and grade written and practical examinations as well as perform appropriate statistical analysis on exam results in accordance with the policies and guidelines provided. This may require monitoring and responding to questions or message board information/requests.
  • Provide SME/scientific technical support that is technically accurate, insightful, and creative; contribute to technical scientific discussions in a manner that is positive contribution to group/teamwork. Deliverables: Planning documents, curriculum meetings, briefings.
  • Perform typical training logistics activities such as using supplies and equipment in accordance with Plan of Instruction, maintaining the order and cleanliness of the training facility as needed, and assisting with setting up and moving furniture and equipment within the facility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to teach various courses, times, locations, and delivery methods, as needed and as reasonably requested by the program.
  • Able to stand and walk around classroom/laboratory for 2 hours continuously and intermittently for 8 hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Instructor must possess a current American Board of Opticianry certification required for program to maintain COE/COA accreditation.
  • Minimum two years’ full-time work experience as an Optical Laboratory Specialist.

  • Ability to successfully pass a background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years of academic and experiential qualifications and backgrounds (identified in documented descriptions of roles and responsibilities) that are necessary to meet program objectives and the mission of the institution.
  • Graduate of a Navy/Army Optical Laboratory program OR a graduate of a civilian equivalent program
  • Documented expertise in their area(s) of teaching responsibility and knowledge of the content delivery method (e.g., distance learning).
  • Evidence of expertise in teaching assignments might include:
  • Documentation of continuing professional development
  • Relevant experience
  • Faculty development plan reflecting acquisition of new content
  • Incorporation of feedback from course evaluations, and other sources.
