**General Definition of Work**
Macon County, located in the mountains of southwestern North Carolina, is seekingapplications for a professional leadership role as County Manager. The County Manager isthe Chief Executive Officer of the County, reports to a five-member Board ofCommissioners, and serves as ex officio Clerk to the Board.The County Manager isresponsible for managing a $63.7 million budget and serves as the Chief AdministrativeOfficer for 22 departments, supervising approximately 394 full-time employees. Applicantsmust have an understanding of the operations and organization of local government,including budget preparation, finance, human resource management, and knowledge ofpublic administration principles and best practices.
Effective verbal and writtencommunication skills are essential to establish and build relationships with thecommissioners, citizens, community leaders and organizations, businesses, other localgovernment officials, media representatives, county department heads, and employees.

- The ability to develop and manage a budget with multiple capital projects and collaborate withvarious partners
- The ability and inclination to connect with the public, employees, businesses, and community organizations
- The ability to communicate well with the Board of Commissioners. They will treat all of them equallyand ensure they all have the same information
- The ability to effectively mentor and manage staff
- Ability to develop strategic goals and projects with the Board of Commissioners, county departments,and county partners.
- The position requires a bachelor's degree in public administration (Master's degree in public administration preferred), business administration, or a comparable field with a minimum of five to tenyears of successful experience in county or city management or an equivalent combination of educationand experience.
- North Carolina local government experience is a plus.
- Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
