Job Description
Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II.The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors.
Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.
Danville Community College (DCC) is seeking an energetic, innovative and student-focused Workforce Career Coach to work with students interested in noncredit, high-demand credentials associated with the Workforce Credential Grant Program (WCG).
The Workforce Career Coach will recruit and assist students through a non-credit program that leads to high-demand employment.
Duties include:
- Recruiting students of all ages and backgrounds
- Career and educational planning
- Program admissions
- Financial Aid
- Work experiences
- Job placement
- Key data to Workforce Educational System (WES) non-credit software management system
- Support student persistence and program completion by implementing retention strategies
- Assisting students in overcoming barriers to success and connecting students to supportive services in the region, including the services of the One-Stop Career Centers, as appropriate
- Assisting with the completion of non-credit financial aid and scholarship applications, eligibility determinations for programs and funding, as well as other duties, as assigned
- Participating in ongoing professional development to advance the college mission and initiatives
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of, training, and/or work experience in counseling, human resources, social services, or a related field.
- Pursue the Virginia Career Coach certification within 12 months of hire, with the goal of obtaining those credentials.
- Excellent communication skills and the demonstrated ability to collaborate with all stakeholders to include the public, community colleges, workforce partners and employers.
The successful candidate will have knowledge of the workforce system and support resources available for student success and must have knowledge of and skills in the following areas:
- Recruitment
- Coaching
- Career assessment
- Development of individual action plans
- Job search, resume writing, interview skills and professionalism
- Communicating and building networks with a variety of workforce partners and stakeholders including employers and funding agencies
- Working with employers for job referrals, work experience or placement
- Working collaboratively with administration, faculty, staff, and students
- Workforce development programs (e.g. WIOA, RVHI) and credentials
- Labor market information analysis
- Student resources including financial aid (e.g., WCG, FANTIC) and supportive services
- Listening and helping skills
- Effective problem-solving skills
- Working with diverse populations and individuals from all ages and backgrounds
- Commitment to the community college mission
- Data systems, operations and linkages
- Microsoft Office and social media
- Currently holds a Virginia Career Coach certification
