Purpose and Scope:

Provides a range of services to promote mental health, emotional/behavioral functioning and educational progress for all students with and without disabilities. The position is responsible for evaluating students for special services; recommending and coordinating services with teachers, parents and others as appropriate; providing therapeutic and consultative services; maintaining accurate and up-to-date case records, and performing related professional and administrative work as required.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Reviews referrals; reviews and/or collects data for and prepares student histories, and conducts parent and teacher conferences to obtain background information; Prepares and submits accurate and complete documentation of all assigned cases.
  2. Administers, interprets and scores intelligence, aptitude, achievement and other psychological tests to aid in placement decisions; evaluates students for suspected disabilities; prepares reports recommending interventions and/or disability determination; communicates and interprets evaluation results to parents and teachers.
  3. Participates in IEP and 504 program meetings.
  4. Consults and collaborates with the Student Support Team to design interventions, facilitate students' learning, track progress and promote social-emotional adjustment through direct or indirect intervention strategies.
  5. Makes recommendations for instructional programming based on theoretical models of school psychology.
  6. Provides therapeutic and consultative services to students and families as needed, including individual and group counseling, family counseling, social skills training and behavior management counseling.
  7. Assists families and schools in dealing with crises associated with personal or school tragedy, natural disasters and related incidents.
  8. Observes students in the classroom setting; helps to solve conflicts and problems in learning and adjustment and provides parent and teacher consultation to address management of student progress in academics, behavior, communication and adaptive skills.
  9. Provides prevention services targeted toward at-risk individuals as well as school-wide populations or problems.
  10. Provides schools with legal and technical information related to assigned special services; develops and delivers professional development programs for staff and training for parents to promote understanding of and coping skills for psychological problems and interventions.
  11. Serves as an advocate for students and a liaison between schools and appropriate agencies which can provide services to students in need of additional assistance.
  12. Maintains awareness and expertise in current professional research, trends and methodologies as they apply to school psychological services; attends training, conferences and workshops as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  13. Adheres to the code of ethics of the National Association of School Psychologists and/or American Psychological Association, and guidelines of the Tennessee Association of School Psychologists.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires Master’s degree in Psychology (school, counseling or clinical psychology), and one (1) year of related experience and/or training which may include Psychology internships.

Tennessee Board of Examiners in Psychology licensure as a Senior Psychological Examiner or Psychologist/Health Services Provider is required.

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
