About the Role

The Passage of Hope Program provides transitional residential care and other supportive services to Unaccompanied Children (UC) who are under legal custody of the Federal Government. Working in collaboration with the Federal Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), our program provides a safe and nurturing environment for youth in our Basic Shelter and Transitional and Long Term Foster Care programs located at our licensed residential facilities and foster homes throughout New York City and Westchester County.

While in our care we search, assess, and provide connections with family members and/or other potential sponsors in the United States, so they can move forward with their lives and thrive. In all programs, we provide therapeutic and educational services and other supports that youth need to achieve success through an array of strength-based and targeted interventions.

The Teaching Assistant will assist the Teacher in creating, reviewing, and implementing the academic curriculum in accordance with the NYS State Education guidelines for

ages 0 to 17.

Responsibilities:

  • Will assist the Teacher in the development of all lesson plans and curriculum for all assigned youth in the program.
  • Will ensure that the lesson plans meet the developmental needs of the youth in the program, are in their native language, and provide opportunities for the youth
to learn English, Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Physical Education, Social Studies, and Acculturation.
  • Will work with the Office of Refugee Resettlement and other governing bodies to ensure that the program meets ORR standards as they relate to the educational needs of the youth supported by the program.
  • Will assist in ensuring that youth are provided all specialized, differentiated, and individualized educational and tutorial services in collaboration with supervisors and other program departments.
  • Will assist in creating and facilitating educational activities in the community as well as hands-on projects that will enhance the lesson plans provided to the UC youth.
  • Will maintain inventory of all education supplies and ensure that education program is fully equipped to meet the needs of the youth supported by the program.
  • Will facilitate assessments for minors within 72 hours of arrival and every 90 days thereafter.
  • Will participate and assist in the implementation of ongoing committees, professional development opportunities, and trainings to enhance educational practices and meet agency

compliance needs.

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual/Multilingual
  • One year of classroom teaching field experience providing academic services to youth who present behavioral, educational, and emotional challenges is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field is preferred.
  • Pathway and progression towards classroom teaching certificate titles according to NYS Department of Education (Teaching Assistant Level I or higher Certificate) is preferred.
  • Pathway and progression towards credentials to teach Bilingual Education, ESOL, or ENL classes to support English Language Learners (ELL) is preferred.
  • Pathway to a master’s degree in education or related field is preferred.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position with an annual salary of: $54,600.00. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 7:30am - 3:30pm in our Headquarters at 151 Lawrence Street, Brooklyn, NY.

  • Ability to travel to other Rising Ground sites (if required)
