Job Summary:
The Assistant Electrician is a member of the Music Hall production team dedicated to making productions run smoothly and efficiently within the resources provided. This Assistant position will work as a member of the Music Hall House Crew and work with the Head Electrician to lead the electrics crew for load-ins/outs, show runs, and special projects and is responsible for ensuring their fellow technicians are operating effectively, safely, and following company and show guidelines.This position focuses on electrics, including the operation of spotlights, for all Broadway productions as well as many rentals (including comedy, concerts, and dance events).
Essential functions:
- Be present and fully engaged in the hours set forward by the Production Manager, Head Carpenter, and Head Electrician for events/performances and all maintenance/work calls
- Assist with coordination and maintenance of electrical and lighting equipment during productions and events in residence in the Music Hall
- Setup of supplies and equipment for backstage areas (including power relays, distros, and lights both conventional and intelligent)
- Perform regular inventory checks and generate schedule for routine maintenance of department equipment
- Clear and regular communication with Head Electrician to ensure department runs smoothly
- Responsibility for the safety of electricians, other production staff, and patrons throughout the work day
- Manage small groups of electricians in production duties during load-ins, work calls, rehearsals, performances, load-outs, & maintenance calls
- Ability to troubleshoot lighting equipment in efficient and timely manner
- Fully familiarize themselves with the Music Hall’s lighting equipment and infrastructure
- Attend requested production meetings and production post-mortems
- Assist in other production departments with projects as time and needs allow
- Examples: build, paint, or install scenic elements; hang, power, and cable audio elements, lift and move objects
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Two years experience in professional technical theater
- Experience in soldering, cable construction, and electronics repair
- Familiarity with and ability to use all of the tools necessary to perform duties
- Experience reading and interpreting run sheets, technical documents, construction and design drawings, technical riders, draftings/plots, circuit lists, magic sheets, etc
- Experience programming and operating an ETC lighting console
- Experience operating and maintaining Followspots
- Demonstrated fluency in Microsoft Office (primarily Outlook, Word, and Excel)
- Demonstrated time management skills: ability to perform well under pressure, meet deadlines, and work independently
- Flexibility, creativity, and resourcefulness
- Reliable transportation to and from the Music Hall
Physical Requirements:
- Mobility: ability to stand, bend, crawl, reach, carry, climb ladders, stairs
- Safely lifting loads of 50 pounds by oneself, lifting 100-200 pounds with two or three people
- Visual acuity to distinguish color, texture and patterns
