The Role
Newport News Shipbuilding's Automation Controls and Networking Department (E44) is seeking an experienced software engineer knowledgeable of software and database design and development characteristic of shipboard control system. The successful candidate will join a group of software developers responsible for the design and implementation of shipboard distributed control system software associated with various HM&E systems.The successful candidate will be responsible for the gathering and assessment of shipboard information, characterization of said data into design attributes compatible with control system software, design, development and deployment of consumable databases, and integration of said design databases into control and monitoring application software.
Typical activities include: Designs, develops, documents, tests and debugs applications software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions. Conducts multidisciplinary research and collaborates with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software.Determines computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; prepares operating instructions; designs and develops compilers and assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems.
Ensures software standards are met.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Nice to Have
Knowledge of and experience with shipboard system interfaces, HM&E system components, and operational characteristics necessary for control system software design and integration is desired and beneficial
Advanced knowledge and experience with MS Access, My SQL, Maria DB, Visual Basic, and Python is beneficial
Strong communication skills are necessary to effectively collaborate with other Newport News Shipbuilding engineering groups cognizant of HM&E systems integrated into the shipboard control system software.
