Overview:

The Patient Safety Specialist (PSS) provides consultative services to Defense Health Agency (DHA) leaders and staff to reduce the risk of harm to patients and improve clinical outcomes. The PSS provides information regarding ongoing evaluation of performance, facilitates prioritization of improvement activities, and shares knowledge as subject matter expert and prioritizes improvement work to align with organizational strategy.
Develops and implements innovative strategies to improve patient safety, quality of work, quality of care, and clinical quality outcomes. Has consistent contact with facility level executive leaders and serves as entry point to the DHA Patient Safety department and ensure successful implementation of initiatives at the local level.

The PSS is agile in providing and prioritizing project management by leading either pro-active or reactive activities related to Quality and Safety. Identifies opportunities for improvement in process, structure and /or outcome and determines the appropriate process improvement methodology.

Responsibilities:

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Other duties as assigned supporting patient safety initiatives;
  • Ability to travel if required;
  • For PSS personnel with data analytic duties: basic skills in Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, Structured Query Language (SQL), related databases, and visual report design tools. Basic skills in quantitative and qualitative data analysis;
  • The ability to work independently, organize time, and manage multiple projects simultaneously; The ability to pay attention to detail and the ability to effectively communicate PS concepts to leadership and DHA safety;Experience with patient safety aspects of healthcare accreditation is highly desirable. PSSs without such experience must become familiar with PS accreditation requirements.
  • Documented experience with performing Comprehensive Systematic Analysis (CSAs) and Proactive Risk Assessment (PRAs);Proficient in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to a broad range of functional areas related to Lean Six Sigma and other commercial quality/performance improvement practices documented; The ability to work collaboratively with Risk Manager (RM) and Quality Manager (QM).
  • Must have the ability to assist with the entire DHA PS Program and the versatility to work in multi-areas within the DHA PS Program; and
  • Other duties as assigned supporting patient safety initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, in a nursing or healthcare related field;
  • Bachelor’s level skills in written and oral communications, public speaking, and fosters positive interpersonal relationships;
  • Four (4) years minimum experience in healthcare related field; military inpatient facility experience highly desired;

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in the military health system is highly desired;
  • Experience with patient safety aspects of healthcare accreditation is highly desirable. PSSs without such experience must become familiar with PS accreditation requirements;
  • Understanding of Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, and SQL is preferred;
  • The ability to work independently, organize time, and manage multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Knowledge of The Joint Commissions (TJCs) accreditation standards, process, PS initiatives, and patient safety goals is preferred;
  • Experience with performing Comprehensive Systematic Analysis (CSAs), Proactive reassessment (PRAs), and Performance Improvement (PIs) are highly desirable but able to be acquired after DHA start;
  • Conducts periodic project status meetings and provides periodic status reports to senior leaders; and
  • Certified Professional in Patient Safety.
