Sr. Technical Program Manager, Test Systems Engineering

The R&D Test Systems Engineering (TSE) team is responsible for identifying, designing, building, and commissioning scalable test solutions to accelerate product development cycles by leveraging Tesla’s technology to reduce cost and complexity.

TSE is a rare team at Tesla that supports existing and new product validation of vehicle, energy and robotic programs across engineering and manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to contribute to all aspects of Tesla’s business and really feel the impact of Tesla’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

A Sr. Technical Program Manager will be the key point of contact for the TSE team to own internal customer relationships, define project scope (cost, schedule, technical), facilitate cross-functional teams, and execute to plan. This role will flex between project management of complex technical projects and procurement for the entire TSE team (buying/planning, cost analysis, funding approvals, inventory management).
The right candidate will apply first principles thinking, lead through influence, establish strict organizational processes, and balance competing company/team priorities. You must be a relentless communicator (written and verbal) to clearly state the next steps needed to keep actions on track, ensure engineering builds have the needed materials, purchase orders are tracked, and invoices are dispositioned in a timely manner.

Prioritization, risk analysis and risk mitigation are critical skills to succeed in this role.

Familiarity with tools such as Confluence, SharePoint and JIRA is preferred. This position offers a great opportunity to learn apply project management skillsets to use in a fast-paced company such as Tesla and then grow into future roles to manage larger projects and complex technical programs.

  • Work with Technical Program Management to track and report on project execution across requirements, design, procurement, build, commissioning, and sustaining
  • Act as TSE point-of-contact with internal and external customers to define project scope , CAPEX, schedule and help align resources across cross functional teams
  • Coordinate the flow of information across cross-functional teams including facilities, construction, drive systems engineering, reliability test engineering, motor design engineering, and external suppliers/vendors to ensure project milestones are being met
  • Balance competing priorities across a large number of ongoing projects across Energy, Vehicle and Robotics domains
  • Ensure tight collaboration using digital project management tools such as Confluence, SharePoint, JIRA, and PowerPoint
  • Track resourcing of projects and drive resource balancing between different program priorities
  • Advise and develop systems and best JIRA /processes practices for tracking, communication and change management to support internal development and build teams
  • Weekly Sprint Planning and Creating JIRA Dashboards to monitor the progress of build, issues in field as well as the development tasks
  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in project management for mechanical, electrical, and/or software systems
  • Experience working in a fast-paced R&D environment transitioning conceptual designs to launched products
  • Experience with Jira, SharePoint, Confluence, PowerPoint
  • Experience in procurement, tracking materials, maintaining BOM’s, tracking checklists, and following up on the actions needed to close issues as they arise.
  • Open-minded self-starter with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, technical environment, and to work independently on multiple tasks and projects, adapt, improvise and problem solve
  • Self-Driven, self-motivated, and able to make responsible decisions. Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Basic understanding of product development lifecycle, focused on Mechanical design
  • Basic understanding of rotating systems, including rotor dynamics, bearings, seals, and lubrication
  • Basic understanding of high voltage and electrical principles
