The Division of Finance and Administration (DFA) provides services and support to over 50,000 students, faculty, and staff with the mission of advancing UCI's brilliant future and the vision of becoming world-class campus partners. Facilities Management is responsible for the effective operation of Irvine campus buildings, grounds and utilities; for providing a safe, functionally suitable and aesthetic environment in support of academic, research and public service programs of the University.
Providing comprehensive management of campus facilities requires the employment of approximately 325 personnel ranging in classification from custodians and groundskeepers to more technical skilled crafts such as electricians and plumbers, and professional design staff and engineers.
These services cover more than 150 buildings of approximately 6 million gross square feet, and1,475 acres of grounds. Facilities Management has an annual operating budget exceeding $80 million in expenditures, with operating funds of $30 million and $15 million for reimbursable campus activities.

Project Services a construction department within Facilities Management manages a portfolio of major infrastructure and renovation projects totaling $200M per year.

Responsibilities:

The Grounds and Hardscape Sr. Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily operations of grounds maintenance, hardscape management / exterior construction services for the University of California, Irvine (UCI) campus.

This role involves planning, directing, and supervising a range of activities, including staff. Managing all aspects of grounds maintenance operations i.e., landscaping, tree maintenance, irrigation, pest control, and hardscape/exterior construction and debris removal to ensure a well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing campus environment.

Responsibilities include managing and scheduling Grounds/Irrigation and Exterior Construction/Mason crews, supervising the maintenance and repair of paved and hardscaped areas, and partnering with other departments to manage the upkeep of campus exterior elements such as signage, bike racks, and benches.

The superintendent will also develop and execute preventive maintenance programs for equipment, handle supply management, and coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure quality and compliance with service agreements.

Additionally, the role involves providing support to campus partners, responding to both emergency and routine requests, and ensuring that all work meets campus standards and industry regulations. The superintendent will oversee financial operations, including assigning and completing work orders, billing and reconciliation, enforce safety protocols, and conduct site visits and inspections to monitor work progress and address any issues.

With a focus on operational efficiency, customer service, and adherence to budgetary guidelines, the Grounds and Hardscape Sr. Superintendent plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety, functionality, and visual appeal of the UCI campus. This position requires strong leadership, effective communication, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and project management.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $85,400.00-$121,100.00 (Annual)

Required:

  • Solid knowledge in landscape, groundskeeping, hardscaping, and exterior construction services.
  • Solid interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, flexibility, and critical thinking, and ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management.
  • Solid decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis.
  • Solid and effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
  • Strong ability to provide plant and pest identification.
  • Intermediate computer applications skill.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others to maintain solid productivity and high morale.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically.
  • Ability to work in a changing environment which may require re-prioritization of daily operations, and management of competing priorities.
  • Bi-lingual, specifically in Spanish.
  • High school diploma and / or equivalent certification / experience / training
  • QAL (Qualified Applicators License -- pesticide applicators license) may be required.
  • Bloodborne pathogen and sharps disposal training.
  • CA Driver’s License
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience of broad experience in grounds maintenance / irrigation and/or hardscape maintenance in Parks and Recreation or large institution including one year in a supervisory type of capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a university setting, including the ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Experience working in and/or supervising in a union environment
  • Academic prep in horticulture preferred.

Special Conditions:

  • Working shift generally; M-F 4:30 am to 1 pm – w/ special exceptions
