Overview:

The Emergency Department Technician (ED Tech) plays a vital role in supporting the clinical team by providing direct patient care and performing essential technical tasks in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The ED Tech assists nurses and physicians with patient assessments, treatments, and procedures, ensuring that the Emergency Department operates efficiently and that patients receive timely, compassionate care.

This role requires strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively under pressure.

Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care Support:
  • Assist in the triage process by taking vital signs, collecting patient history, and preparing patients for examination and treatment.
  • Perform basic patient care tasks, including wound care, splinting, phlebotomy, and EKGs, under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians.
  • Assist with the placement and maintenance of intravenous (IV) lines, catheters, and other medical devices.
  • Monitor and document patients’ conditions, reporting any changes to the nursing staff or physicians immediately.
  1. Clinical Procedures & Equipment:
  • Set up, operate, and maintain medical equipment used in the Emergency Department, such as monitors, suction devices, and oxygen systems.
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of emergency procedures, including resuscitations, trauma care, and other critical interventions.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of patient care areas, ensuring that all equipment and supplies are readily available and in good working order.
  1. Patient Transport & Mobility:
  • Safely transport patients within the Emergency Department and to other areas of the hospital as needed, ensuring proper handling and support.
  • Assist patients with mobility, including transfers to and from stretchers, wheelchairs, and beds, following safe patient handling guidelines.
  1. Documentation & Communication:
  • Accurately document all patient care activities, including procedures performed, vital signs, and patient responses, in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team, providing clear information and responding to inquiries with compassion and professionalism.
  • Participate in shift handoffs, providing detailed reports on patient status, care provided, and any concerns that need to be addressed.
  1. Support for Nursing and Medical Staff:
  • Assist nurses and physicians during examinations and procedures, anticipating needs and providing necessary supplies and instruments.
  • Maintain stock levels of medical supplies and restock rooms as needed to ensure continuous patient care.
  • Support the nursing staff in emergency situations, including providing CPR and other life-saving measures as required.
  1. Compliance & Safety:
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and safety protocols, including infection control, patient privacy, and emergency preparedness.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Report any safety concerns, incidents, or equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel promptly.

Qualifications:

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of an accredited Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, or equivalent training is preferred.
Experience:
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in an emergency department, is preferred.
Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is preferred.
Skills:
  • Strong technical skills, including the ability to perform basic clinical procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on patient-centered care.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) and familiarity with medical equipment.
Working Conditions:
  • The role involves working in a high-stress, fast-paced environment with exposure to emergency situations and critically ill patients.
  • Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.
  • The position requires standing for extended periods and may involve lifting, moving, or assisting patients.
