Pharmacy Purchasing Advanced Pharmacy Technician - Full-time, Days

Job Description:

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Pharmacy Purchasing Advanced Pharmacy Technician in the Pharmacy Purchasing department. In the role of Pharmacy Purchasing APT, you will coordinate the pharmacy drug inventory ($13 mil/month) to maximize the inventory turnover rate and to comply with group purchasing organization contracts, balancing the consideration of the financial investment with daily operational needs.

The Pharmacy Purchasing APT purchases and received all pharmaceuticals for inpatient pharmacies as well as DCAM, offsite clinics, infusion centers, and contract pharmacies if necessary. Analyzes, recommends, and coordinates changes to the pharmacy drug inventory based upon group purchasing organization contracts, purchasing patterns, price changes, and utilization.
Stores and maintains purchase records and vendor contracts. May purchase controlled substance inventory, satisfying legal and regulatory requirements. Provides input for inventory pars in the carousels. Uses customer service approach to relations with Pharmacy staff and outside customers.

Maintains 340b purchasing data in software and follows all 340b required processes to maintain compliance. Performs legal requirements of DSCSA (Drug Supply Chain Security Act).

Essential Job Functions
  • Purchases and receives routine drug inventory utilizing electronic interfaces with the vendor.
  • Recommends alternate product brands that would result in a cost savings.
  • Determines the severity of problems related to drug shortages or other drug availability emergencies.
  • Recommends alternative sources for procurement.
  • Informs pharmacy management of the need to select a new vendor or to utilize an alternative product.
  • Pro-actively communicates drug shortages and/or out of stock to the Pharmacy Purchasing Manager.
  • Places order for all clinics on campus and offsites via a 62 or electronic form.
  • Performs all process related to DSCSA and 340b HRSA compliance.
  • Manages drug recalls via recall software and alerts appropriate parties that are impacted.
  • Maintains records for DSCSA to be compliant with the FDA.
  • Maintains Macrohelix 340b split billing software to be compliant with 340b guidelines.
  • Maintains expired meds and works with reverse distributor to send back all expired meds.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Bachelors or other advanced degree preferred.
  • Valid Illinois pharmacy technician license. Certified Pharmacy Technician License (National Certification)
  • Experience and training as defined by one of the of the following qualifications:
  • Minimum of at least 2-3 years experience in pharmacy purchasing OR minimum of at least 2-5 years experience as a pharmacy technician
  • Knowledge and proficiency with hospital operations and pharmacy practices and procedures, medications and medical supplies, hospital practice and healthcare regulatory requirements, and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of purchasing and 340B guidelines.
  • Computer entry skills and ability to accurately type at 35 WPM
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to work independently with attention to detail, perform mathematical computations, and interact effectively with others.
  • Must be able to handle heavy lifting, push heavy carts and walk long distances.

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. We anticipate that you will generally be scheduled to work day shift, between the hours of 7:30am-4pm.This role will be 100% at our Hyde Park location. The days of the week that you are scheduled will be Monday-Friday and no weekends.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity.

Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
