Position type and expected hours of work: This is a full-time position. The hours will vary due to various shifts and may require working in inclement weather while performing physically demanding tasks for projects or events.

Summary: The Compost & Depack Supervisor oversees daily operations of the composting and depack facility, supervising staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining equipment, and submitting reports to relevant agencies. This role involves developing and maintaining efficient operational systems and responding to stakeholder queries.

Essential functions:

Supervision and Leadership:

  • Supervise and coordinate activities of day laborers and equipment operators.
  • Provide training and guidance for efficient and safe operations.
  • Ensure maintenance personnel have a full plan, augmented as needed with other resources.
  • Monitor performance and provide feedback.

Operational Management:

  • Oversee composting processes, including material receipt, pad activities, grinding, and quality control.
  • Manage depack processes to optimize material use, minimize tip requirements, and synchronize with composting schedules.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and operation of composting, depack, bio-filter, and transportation equipment.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with city and state regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation (e.g., daily logs of dust control, water, odor, temperature).
  • Track logs related to AZDEQ Rule 327 and City of Phoenix requirements.
  • Submit daily and weekly reports to agencies.
  • Ensure on-time safety and HR training, tracked through Denali Cornerstone software.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of site equipment.
  • Coordinate repairs and servicing.
  • Ensure efficient parts ordering and pickup.

Performance Measurement and Continuous Improvement:

  • Develop and implement performance metrics.
  • Identify and implement improvement strategies.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Experience with ERM systems is ideal.

Truck and Trailer Operation:

  • Ability to drive a ¾ T or larger pickup truck with trailer.
  • Forklift and front loader certifications preferred; ability to be a trainer is a plus.

Communication:

  • Liaise with city/state agencies.
  • Communicate issues or concerns to management.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, including data analysis using MS Excel.

Environmental Log Keeping:

  • Track logs related to Rule 327.

Safety Training:

  • Ensure timely safety training via Denali Cornerstone software.

Log Tracking:

  • Maintain daily logs of dust, water, odor, temperature, etc.

Parts Ordering:

  • Order and pick up parts if the mechanic is unavailable.

Standard Operating Procedures:

  • Develop and maintain standard composting operating procedures and maintenance programs.

Production Monitoring:

  • Monitor and modify production based on conditions (weather, feedstock, technology, equipment status, seasonality, market needs).

Facility Management:

  • Ensure facility productivity and generate finished compost products meeting specifications.
  • Develop and maintain tasks for receiving, mixing, loading/unloading, curing, screening, and storage.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors for project support and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure consistent facility operations to meet client expectations.

Staff Training:

  • Develop materials and present information on composting processes.
  • Train staff with data collection and instrument maintenance.

Public Outreach:

  • Conduct facility tours and participate in public outreach.

Professional Appearance:

  • Maintain a professional appearance and use PPE when required.

Competency:

  • Background in environmental engineering.
  • Experience in a supervisory role, preferably in composting or waste management.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of composting processes and equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping and report writing.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks.
  • Ability to drive a pickup truck and trailer is a plus.

Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in inside conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, or overwhelming odors.

Physical demands: To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, climb and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is occasionally required to balance, stoop, knee, crouch, crawl and walk. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel: Travel is expected with this position.
