Overview:

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION:

Construction work experience and basic understanding of construction means and methods. Experience inspecting construction work activities of the same or similar type as that of the project which the Transportation Construction Inspector is assigned.

Experience may be in the following sectors: federal, municipal, transportation, ports or marina projects.

Responsibilities:

MAIN DUTIES:

  • Provides on-site inspection and quality assurance of various roadway and structure construction projects for conformance to plans, contracts, specifications and codes applicable to the construction operations assigned.
  • Performs work of basic to moderate difficulty.
  • Ensures that maintenance and new construction is completed in accordance with the contract, plans and specifications, approved shop drawings, approved material lists, and permit requirements.
  • Performs required materials testing.
  • Performs basic surveying and necessary measurements to check line, grade, and dimensions of roadway and structural elements and advises the contractor of any discrepancies.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with agency, contractor and MBP personnel.
  • Perform and maintains project records including daily diaries documenting work performed by construction contractors which includes detailed locations of work, construction workforce, equipment, and materials records, as well as project photos and inspection reports. Also, prepare monthly project estimates. Reports may involve incorporation of basic algebraic, geometric and trigonometric calculations and associated sketches. Reports are expected to include activities of the team member.
  • May assist in the oversight, training, and development of Construction Inspector Trainee.
  • Ensures that highways work zones and traffic control setups are in accordance with current standards.
  • Has a working knowledge of client’s electronic project management software and is able to properly track, document, and log materials as well as other test reports for materials.
  • Records or monitors recording material received showing quantities estimated to be required in quantities received used and tested.
  • Checks materials and material documents and conduct various roadway tests to make sure that materials delivered meets specifications and placed in accordance to the standard specifications. Sends additional samples to the client for verification of results in accordance with the specifications when necessary.
  • Provides customer services and good etiquette to the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and other project stakeholders.
  • Performs various administrative duties to include but not limited to: daily timesheet, monthly expense report, and monthly mileage report.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Obtains additional training and certifications as needed.
  • Maintains certifications required to inspect the work for which the Inspector is responsible for monitoring.
  • Participates in company activities, including but not limited to branch and company meetings.
  • May support coordination of schedules of inspectors.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE:

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Must possess OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric and trigonometric computations based on field measurements.
  • Construction related training and/or experience or course work in road/bridge construction, civil engineering, project management or materials, or a combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates ability to perform duties.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools utilized in the type of construction, repair, or renovation work that the Inspector is monitoring and inspecting.
  • Certification(s) preferred: NCDOT: Concrete, QMS Roadway, Conventional Density, ABS Sampling, Borrow Pit Sampling, Level II Erosion and Sediment Control
  • Level II Technicians: Minimum four years of relevant experience. Must be able to perform duties without supervision and be able to read resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements.
  • Level III Technician: Minimum five years of relevant experience. Must be able to perform duties without supervision and be able to read resource materials to determine answers to simple inspection requirements.
  • Level IV Technician: Minimum seven years of relevant experience. May serve as Lead Project Inspector performing general project oversight and communication with the client and the Contractor. Will be responsible for the supervision of lower-level technicians while providing guidance as needed.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to carry out specific inspection assignments and document work progress.
  • Ability to utilize computers and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, Email, and Internet navigation and web-based tools.
  • Ability to learn client and MBP specific construction management information systems such as SharePoint, HICAMS, or MBP’s OnTrack, etc. within one month of hire.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and contract specifications for the type of work that the Inspector will be monitoring and inspecting.
  • Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments.
  • Ability to communicate inspection issues effectively and responsibly (verbally and in writing) with internal and external customers (i.e., contractors, owners, sub-consultants and fellow team members).
  • Ability to utilize surveying and measurement tools effectively for the performance of the inspection duties assigned. May include survey levels, transits, four-foot levels, lock levels, measuring tapes, measuring wheels, straight edges and other tools as necessary.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain industry certifications specific to duties assigned.
  • May be responsible for the rejection of work or payment of completed work as delegated by the Project Owner.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp, to raise hands above head, to stand and sit, climb and balance, work in confined spaces and heights with adequate vision to perform tasks up to 12 hours on occasion.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely navigate construction work sites with uneven terrain.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to travel and drive regularly.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

GUIDANCE/RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Assignments are generally received from Engineers/Consultants (including Lead and Senior), Construction Inspector II, Project Inspector, Construction Manager or Project Manager.
  • Work is supervised with opportunities to work independently.
  • Work is expected to be progressively decreased in level of supervision required as knowledge, skills and abilities increase.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fingerprint-based criminal history background check, DMV driving record check, reference verification, and work history will be required prior to employment. Valid driver's license and safety shoes required.
