What You'll Do:

We are looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead our engineering team, ensuring the delivery of scalable, reliable, and secure solutions that power our automated sales tax services. You will collaborate with product, design, and additional team members to align technical execution with our goals and lead innovation.
Your expertise in software development, cloud infrastructure, and Agile methodologies will improve our platform for growth and efficiency. Through strategic leadership and hands-on technical guidance, you will foster a culture of continuous improvement, high-quality engineering, and customer-centric development.

As an important part of our leadership team, you will shape the future of our product and engineering projects.

You can work remotely and report to the Senior Director, Engineering.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be:

  • You will mentor the DAVO engineering team members, providing guidance on technical and architectural challenges, career development, and professional growth opportunities.
  • You will collaborate with multiple teams, including product management, general managers, engineering, and design, to define project requirements, set priorities, and allocate resources.
  • You will ensure excellence, implementing best practices in project management, software development, and quality assurance to improve team productivity.
  • You will manage team member communications, planning, providing regular updates on project status, milestones, and any challenges or risks, ensuring understanding and support across the organization and external partners.
  • You will work with tax jurisdictions and manage tax submissions, tax payments and integrations.

What You'll Need to be Successful:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience designing and building scalable, high-quality customer-facing software.
  • 7+ years managing diverse software engineering teams.
  • Hands-on experience with tools we use or plan to use to continue iterating at Avalara include languages like React, Typescript, NodeJS, and MySQL.
  • Experience with tax automations , tax jurisdictions and POS/Payment systems.
  • Experience working on AWS Cloud with Terraform and Docker

Pay Range Details

The base pay range(s) below are provided in compliance with state specific laws. Pay ranges may be different in other locations.

Colorado $166,100 - $274,100 (annually)

Washington $166,100 - $303,100 (annually)

California $166,100 - $331,900 (annually)

New York $183,700 - $331,900 (annually)

The pay range above is the general base pay range for you in the state listed. Your actual salary/wage may be based on multiple factors, such as geographic location, candidate experience and qualifications, and market and business considerations.

This role is eligible for an annual bonus based on personal and company performance, depending on the terms of the applicable plan and your role.
