Laboratory Assistant

Overview:

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for drawing blood, performing laboratory tests, preparing samples, and producing accurate and reliable data. In addition, they will follow strict adherence to medical procedures, abide by safety guidelines, and maintain equipment.

The Laboratory Assistant will also contribute to the collection of valid results in a laboratory environment.

This is a clinic-based position, located in the Midtown area of Atlanta, GA (2140 Peachtree Rd.)

General work hours are Mon - Fri: 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

About the Role:

  • Perform blood collections by venipuncture for patients.
  • Correctly identify, label, and process patient specimens (Blood, Urine, Swabs, etc.) for testing or shipment to reference laboratory.
  • Verifies patient identification using 2 identifiers and explains collection procedures to patients.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using sterile technique and following department procedures.
  • Performs administrative tasks related to laboratory record-keeping, processes billing information and collect payments when required.
  • Assists in updating laboratory documents and departmental forms
  • Works closely with technologists to ensure specimens are processed timely and accurately.
  • Escalates issues or concerns to laboratory manager
  • Assists with preventative maintenance activities for laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Prepares laboratory reagents and assay materials according to SOPs, standard laboratory recipes/formulas under technologist supervision
  • Organizes patient specimen and assay worksheets/printouts for testing and technologist review
  • Follows all safety procedures, policies, precautions, and Quality Assurance
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

About You:

  • High school diploma or GED; Associate's degree or higher preferred, especially in a related health field
  • Phlebotomist certification preferred
  • First aid certification preferred
  • Prior experience as a phlebotomist technician a plus
  • One year of laboratory experience required
  • Hospital lab experience preferred
  • Adept at venipuncture, phlebotomy, and finger sticks
  • Knowledge of infection control procedures
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to producing accurate work in a timely, efficient manner
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain a high level of attention to detail in a fast-paced work environment
  • Proactively identify problems and provide effective solutions if/when appropriate
  • Must have a positive attitude, be energetic and flexible, compassionate, have excellent phone etiquette, and provide exceptional customer service
