Engineering Manager

About Us

BrightBee is an educational technology startup revolutionizing how K-12 schools engage with hourly, classified, and paraprofessional staff. We believe in unlocking the potential of every school team member, no matter where they started their career journey.

Our mission is to create a future where schools thrive, and workers have the support they need to prosper and grow. As an early-stage company, we are seeking entrepreneurial people who embrace creativity, scrappiness, and the excitement of building something from the ground up.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Engineering Manager to serve as a player coach: leading, mentoring, and guiding a small team of developers (2-3) while also being an individual contributor. The ideal candidate will have a hands-on technical background, coupled with strong leadership skills, and a product sensibility.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor a team of 2-3 software developers, providing guidance, technical direction, and support to help them grow.
  • Develop and maintain front-end and back-end components of our web application, ensuring high performance, responsiveness, and scalability.
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Conduct code reviews, ensure adherence to coding standards, and maintain a high bar for code quality and maintainability.
  • Work with the team to identify and address performance bottlenecks, technical challenges, and bugs through testing, debugging, and optimization.
  • Provide technical input on architecture, design decisions, and development methodologies to support the team in building scalable, secure, and maintainable software.
  • Lead sprint planning, retrospectives, and other Agile ceremonies, driving accountability and ensuring timely delivery of features.
  • Champion a culture of learning, collaboration, and knowledge sharing within the engineering team.
  • Perform hands-on coding when necessary to support critical projects or assist team members with complex challenges.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on full-stack web development.
  • Proven leadership or mentoring experience with small engineering teams, ideally in a startup or fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in front-end technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, TypeScript, and modern frameworks (React, Angular, Vue.js).
  • Solid understanding of back-end development using server-side frameworks and languages such as Node.js, Express.js, or Django.
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL and a deep understanding of relational database patterns.
  • Strong knowledge of version control systems such as Git, and experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a focus on delivering scalable and maintainable solutions.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and manage stakeholders at various levels.
  • Passion for BrightBee’s mission and a desire to make a positive impact in K-12 education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Significant experience working with Supabase or Firebase
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment automation.
  • Prior experience in a startup or entrepreneurial setting, with a willingness to wear multiple hats and contribute wherever needed.
Compensation
  • Competitive cash compensation ranging from $140,000 - $160,000 per year
  • Significant equity in the form of stock options
  • Comprehensive health, vision, dental, and other insurance benefits
  • Unlimited vacation policy and flexible work hours
  • Hybrid work: 2-3 in-person days in our Oakland office per month
  • Opportunity to lead a team and make a significant impact in the education sector while helping to shape the future of learning
