Job Description:

We are looking for a talented Design Safety Engineer to join our dedicated Safety team that can be based out of a number of our office locations in the US - (KS/NC/MD/PA/NJ/MA).

In this role, you will support the development, implementation and maintenance of the IPS Design Division Safety Program. You will work with the Director of Engineering and Design Safety on two primary responsibilities. The first is to ensure that the designs produced by the IPS design division can be constructed, operated, and maintained without compromising the safety and health of all associated personnel, and without compromising the property and environment in which they are constructed and operated.

The second is to implement and monitor the Design Field Safety program to ensure the safety of IPS design division personnel in their daily activities.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Work with the Director of Engineering and Design Safety to provide high-quality process safety support.
  • Coordinate with the director, project managers, and clients to determine the scope, complexity, planning, and scheduling requirements of project activities.
  • Determine the type of safety reviews required for the specific project, including design risk assessments, process hazard analyses (PHA), hazardous area classification (HAC), ergonomic reviews, etc.
  • Facilitate process hazard analyses (PHAs) and design risk assessments using applicable methodology including HAZOP, What-if, HAZID, LOPA, etc.
  • Coordinate planning, scheduling of resources, and compliance with appropriate client standards.
  • Support development and implementation of IPS process safety programs including PHA, PRD, LEL calculations, and HAC.
  • Develop departmental policies and technical standards and procedures
  • Provide technical review for related reports and technical documentation
  • Train IPS personnel on aspects of process safety management
  • Coordinate with outside consultants for training and resourcing to meet IPS standards
  • Perform process safety calculations relating to PRD, LEL infiltration, and hazardous area classification as needed
  • Conduct various reviews to ensure that facility designs accommodate appropriate regulations including:
  • Containment provided when projects are dealing with biosafety, radiation safety, or potent compounds
  • Accommodation of combustible/flammable dusts and solvents per building codes and standard industrial practice
  • Provide consultation services to colleagues and clients on potential hazards and mitigation strategies.
  • Estimate work hours to generate project deliverables and support the design safety team.
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, consistency, and completeness of overall work, including compliance with established IPS standards and procedures and regulatory codes and ordinances.
  • Timely delivery of project deliverables adhering to project schedules.
  • Participate in business development by seeking out new service opportunities with existing or new clients.
  • Contribute to the preparation and delivery of sales presentations and proposals.
  • Work with the Design Safety Director and corporate EHS leadership to evaluate and monitor necessary training and awareness programs for design division personnel.
  • Support implementation of the Design Field Safety program through auditing of completed checklists.
  • Provide additional training when results show continued deficiencies.
  • Support design division personnel in the identification and assessment of workplace hazards at both IPS and client facilities.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • 5 + Years of industrial Process Safety experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited University or College in Engineering, Architecture, or a relevant science.
  • Has sufficient technical proficiency in various facets of process safety to understand project requirements and apply the appropriate resources and execution approach for a successful project.
  • Knowledge of OSHA 1910 and 1926 requirements.
  • Experience interacting and communicating directly with cross-functional facility owner teams.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects contemporaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Some experience in the AEC or Life Sciences industries.
