Overview:

This position works under the direction and supervision of the Principal in the assigned school serving children with behavioral and emotional challenges as well as cognitive or developmental delays. Working in a collaborative, team based model, the Counselor works with a selected student (s) to implement individual lesson and behavioral plans.

Work is performed using a systems approach within the psycho-educational model. Assignment may be at one of St. Joseph's Villa’s academies or in an area public school.

All work is performed safely, effectively, to the highest ethical standards, and in accordance with regulatory and accrediting standards and St. Joseph’s Villa’s mission, values, and guiding principles.

Responsibilities:

Maintains sight and sound supervision of students.

Models appropriate behavior: punctuality, decorum, stress management and conflict resolution.

Assists teachers with academics and implementation of IEP

Develops appropriate adult/child relationship to facilitate learning social, community, and life skills.

May administer medications in accordance with program procedures.

Informs classroom teacher when the student is experiencing behavioral or learning challenges.

Implements behavior management system, applied behavior analysis, and individual behavior plans as designed by the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) and Treatment Team.

Maintains documentation regarding students as required: incident reports, behavior plans, progress charts and daily logs.

Transports students to activities in the community as directed.

Assists students with personal care and personal hygiene as needed

Uses approved behavior management techniques to work with students in crisis.

Attends and participates in scheduled staff meetings and trainings.

Evaluates work processes and methods and submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement.

Attends scheduled training programs for professional development that includes, at a minimum, trainings required by St. Joseph’s Villa and by regulatory and accrediting bodies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

HS required. BS/BA degree in education or a related field preferred. Experience with Windows, Outlook, and MS Word preferred. Experience with proprietary software preferred. Valid VA driver’s license with excellent driving record.
