Overview:
As a member of the Hebrew SeniorLife (HSL) Senior leadership team, the Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services (CNO/VPPCS) is responsible for establishing strategic goals and providing oversight of nursing and clinical practice for Hebrew Senior Life.Working with outside partners and organizations, the CNO/VPPCS sets priorities and goals for clinical practice to enhance the transition of care throughout the various clinical service lines. Internally, the CNO/VPPCS establishes and oversees budgets and operations that facilitate achievement of Corporate and departmental specific goals, including the achievement of positive employee engagement outcomes.
The CNO/VPPCS is responsible for the administrative and clinical functions of the long term chronic care nursing, social services, life enhancement, spiritual care, expressive therapy, and bilingual and interpreter services teams and volunteer services on the Roslindale and Dedham campuses.
Additionally, the CNO/VPPCS is accountable for the provision of person directed care and the implementation of Person Centered Care initiatives in the long term chronic care setting. In collaboration with the department of quality and other members of the executive team, the CNO/VPPCS is responsible for compliance with all federal and state regulations.
The CNO/VPPCS sets nursing practice in the Post Acute floors (RSU/MCU) and is responsible for the ongoing professional development and engagement of direct care teams.
Responsibilities:
- Sets strategic priorities for nursing and clinical practice and provides input to overall Corporate goals and drivers as a member of the Senior Leadership team.
- Identifies budgetary priorities and provides oversight to appropriate use of resources to support corporate and department specific goals.
- Creates a work environment that promotes strong employee engagement and self directed work teams to achieve identified corporate and departmental goals.
- Provides oversight to nursing practice and collaborates with HSL nursing leadership and other leaders to ensure the delivery of high quality and cost effective care.
- Collaborates with outside organizations, partners and referral services to facilitate transitions of care and established collaborative care practices.
- Directs, guides, assists, and coordinates the activities of all the assigned clinical services in carrying out the facility’s objectives and policies.
- Establishes the philosophy and objectives of the clinical services departments in accordance with HSL’s commitment to person centered care.
- Administers and coordinates facility projects, utilizing the talent and skills of the leadership and front line teams.
- Participates in the development and implementation of the facility’s goals, objectives, plans and policies for the provision of patient care services.
- Establishes appropriate links, common practices and policies between all HRC campuses in conjunction with HRC leadership and other staff.
- Embraces patients and families as partners in care and coaches and mentors staff to listen actively and respond to needs.
- Establishes and leads a forum to engage patients and families in an advisory role on matters of relevance or concern to patients and families and to provide input and perspective on policies or initiatives as needed
- Establishes a program for professional standards development and monitors quality indicators against external and internal benchmarks.
- Provides oversight to volunteer services and ensures positive community relations and adherence to regulatory requirements.
- Directs the implementation and evaluation of all department activities and programs in a cost effective manner.
- Develops, implements and maintains an ongoing quality improvement program and reports to the various quality committees including Health Care Service Committee and Quality and Safety Committee.
- Provides coaching and supervision and leadership to nursing and other department leaders, creating an environment of accountability.
- Develops, implements, monitors and evaluates a budgetary process for each of the assigned areas that facilitate appropriate/effective allocation of human and material resources.
- Actively participates in Professional organizations/committees. Presents and/or consults professionally to share outcomes.
- Participates in employee relation programs and creates highly engaged employees.
- Utilizes data from various sources (census, unit acuity levels, QI findings, MDS, etc.) to determine overall staffing requirements for the department and develops/implements/evaluates a master staffing plan for the employment/deployment of clinical personnel.
- Is accountable for the selection and retention of sufficient personnel to implement the functions of the departments and minimizes turnover rate.
- Maintains a strong partnership with the Human Resources Department for effective staff management.
- Implements and maintains systems for determining requirements for nursing care to ensure that patient care is provided and effectively supervised on all shifts.
- Works in collaboration with professional development to develop and participate in clinical and person centered programs including orientation, in-service and continuing education.
- Represents HRC at appropriate professional internal and external meetings and network affiliations at the local and national level.
- Presents at Board committee meetings.
Required Qualifications:
- Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- Masters Degree required.
- Ten (10) years progressive management experience, with demonstrated competence in nursing practice and administration.
- 5-10 years of Post-acute management experience within complex healthcare or long-term chronic care organizations.
- Proven experience managing a large number of staff and sizeable budgets within complex organizations.
- Superb organizational and solid analytical skills.
- Collaborative, conscientious and results-oriented individual with excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Display good intuition, sound judgment, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Must be innovative, think strategically and conceptually, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and handle difficult and sensitive situations.
- Proficiency with MS Office and database experience
