Job Title: Director of Classic Worship

General Function

The Director of Classic Worship is responsible for creating engaging worship experiences that utilize traditional Christian music and liturgy to help people connect more deeply with God.
The Director of Classic Worship must have a love of traditional Christian worship. Knowing the rituals of The United Methodist Church and the music of The United Methodist Hymnal is a plus.

This role is responsible to recruit, inspire, encourage, and equip those with musical gifts and abilities to serve effectively in classic worship. This person must be a strong vocalist, choir director, song leader, and musical coach who is able to develop and grow musicians and teams.

This person must be flexible, organized, consistent, and punctual. They must also interact with others in a kind, professional, and courteous fashion. They must be a collaborative team member, who is committed to, and supports, the vision and mission of Cornerstone UMC and its leadership.

Entry Requirements/Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of prior worship and/or musical leadership
  • Strong vocalist skills
  • Strong technical accuracy
  • Degree in music, worship arts, or equivalent experience
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Supervisory
  • Provide supervision and coaching to paid accompanists and volunteer handbell choir director.
  • Conduct accompanist annual reviews.
  • Review and approve accompanist timesheets.
  • Ensure accompanists are scheduled for all rehearsals and classic worship services, including special services.
Classic (Traditional) Worship
  • Schedule and coordinate classic worship planning meetings.
  • Suggest hymns and other music for classic worship services.
  • Create and maintain order of worship documents for classic services.
  • Ensure classic worship stakeholders are equipped with the information needed for their roles. This includes, but is not limited to, the Lead Pastor, Accompanist(s), Director of Operations, AV Director, Liturgist, Lay Reader, Choir, Musicians, Ushers, etc.
  • Lead the congregation (in-person and online) in singing hymns.
  • Perform solos, duets, etc. during worship as special music.
  • Identify regular opportunities for special music and/or instruments during classic worship services. This includes selecting musicians, instruments, and special music; leading rehearsals; setting up chancel; and coordinating the performance.
  • Ensure necessary licenses and permissions are obtained and communicated to stakeholders for all music utilized during classic worship.
  • Review classic worship slides for accuracy.
  • Assist in leading worship liturgy as requested.
  • Partner with AV team to provide a seamless worship experience for in-person and online worshippers.
Chancel Choir (August through May)
  • Recruit, coach, equip, and care for volunteer choir members.
  • Select, order, inventory, organize, and maintain classic music library, choir room, supplies, and equipment.
  • Schedule and lead choir rehearsals and performances
  • Communicate music selections to accompanists and AV teams with plenty of advance notice.
Special Services
  • Collaborate with the Lead Pastor and other stakeholders to plan, prepare, and offer musical selections during Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Easter, and other special services during the year.
  • Assist with decorating worship space for special seasons and services.
Other
  • Schedule Handbell Choir performances in collaboration with volunteer handbell director.
  • Protect and maintain confidentiality across all settings and forms of communications.
  • Foster strong working relationships with Cornerstone UMC staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders on systems, procedures, and policies to ensure alignment.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and 1-1 meetings with supervisor.
  • Maintain Safe Gatherings certification.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Lead Pastor.
Skills & Talents
  • Must have a passion for Christian ministry as expressed by Cornerstone UMC.
  • Must be on time and well prepared for rehearsals and worship services.
  • Must be collaborative, compassionate, diplomatic, and solution oriented.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in team environments.
  • Must possess strong time management skills and good organizational abilities.
  • Must be comfortable addressing and resolving conflict in a healthy way.
Work Environment
  • The Director of Classic Worship works between 5 and 10 hours per week. Additional hours must be approved in advance by the Lead Pastor.
