Staff Accountant

We are offering a contract to hire employment opportunity for a Staff Accountant in our Virginia Beach, Virginia office. As part of our team, you will be responsible for various accounting tasks within the construction industry, including processing payments, maintaining project cash positions, and handling journal entries.

• Verify and process subcontractor applications for payment
• Assist in the creation of Owner Application for Payment by ensuring accurate reflection of subcontract bills
• Resolve deficiencies that may prevent the release of subcontractor/vendor payments
• Ensure payment to second-level subcontractors and vendors
• Review and update project cash position, outstanding payables, receivables, and retainage monthly
• Post correct billings, invoices, and subcontractor applications for payments in the correct accounting period
• Prepare and update stored material log for deposits and inventory stored materials
• Manage task scheduling in Blackline and prepare project-specific schedules when applicable
• Conduct monthly meetings to review payment status and subcontractor deficiencies
• Perform ad hoc tasks as assigned or requested by Project Management. • Possession of a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounting, preferably within the construction industry.
• Proficiency in using MS Excel for data analysis and reporting.
• Experience in construction accounting is highly desirable.
• Proficient in managing accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR).
• Demonstrable experience in preparing and posting journal entries.
• Strong understanding of general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
• Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification is a plus.
