Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Engineering Technician in our Costa Mesa, CA office. The role will perform level I through level II advanced geotechnical field and laboratory testing procedures; assist with sample collection of diverse materials including, but not limited to, soil, sediment, water, and air for environmental tests; compile construction quality assurance (CQA) monitoring data and oversee CQA program implementation related to heavy civil infrastructure, landfill and waste containment facility construction projects, produce well organized, neat, accurate, written, and/or computer-generated documents using a variety of computer software of all field-related activities to senior level project personnel; and provide additional field and office support to geologists and engineers for a diverse private and public sector client base.

The role requires the ability to comprehend construction plans and specifications, a willingness to perform extensive fieldwork and travel for extensive periods of time, including overnights, weekends, and holidays, and a strong willingness to work outdoors with an interest in building a career in the civil and geotechnical consulting field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform field and on-site laboratory tests on soil, geosynthetics, aggregates, and other materials (i.e., steel and concrete) primarily associated with heavy civil infrastructure, landfill, and/or waste containment system construction;
  • Monitor activities on job sites to assure compliance with relevant contract documents (e.g., technical specifications, construction drawings, sampling plans, CQA plans etc.);
  • Provide CQA monitoring, groundwater sampling, soil and geosynthetics sampling, air monitoring, and contractor oversight on several types of construction and/or environmental activities on construction sites and develop understanding of construction management responsibilities;
  • Prepare individual daily field reports, weekly construction schedules and progress reports, meeting agendas, meeting minutes, testing, and monitoring logs, and related project documentation (i.e., field forms or as part of the database system) in a legible, accurate, and timely manner consistent with company policies;
  • Interact with project personnel (contractors, project managers, engineers & clients) and assist in cultivating an integrated team approach through open lines of communications and participation in work progress meetings;
  • Assist in the preparation of the final reports, work plans, health and safety documents, and the assembly of report appendices; and
  • Observe and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the site-specific project health and safety plans and the company’s Environmental Health and Safety Management policies and procedures.

Education and Licensure:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED). (required)
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in science, construction management, engineering, physical science, environmental science, or related subjects. (preferred)
  • ICC certified soils and/or reinforced concrete inspector. (required)
  • Deputy Inspector for City of Los Angeles (preferred)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 4 years (6+ preferred) of applicable experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, including survey and topographical drawings. (required)
  • Experience ensuring field activities comply with construction plans and specifications and the ability to monitor several different types of activities simultaneously. (required)
  • Experience with the operation of industry typical monitoring and data collection equipment, including but not limited laptop and handheld computers, Troxler moisture /density gauges, Sand Cone Testing, scales, and other equipment. (required)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word software programs. (required)
  • Strong mathematical background with the ability to perform calculations in basic geometry and use of algebra. (required)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
  • Ability to speak and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required)
  • Strong willingness to work outdoors with interest in building a career in the environmental consulting field. (required)
  • Technical experience in construction services, geotechnical, environmental, or related engineering disciplines. (preferred)
  • Technical understanding of site investigation, construction quality assurance, and/or construction management procedures for heavy civil infrastructure, solid waste facility or environmental remediation projects. (preferred)
  • Experience with multi-media sampling including soil, water, and air. (preferred)
  • Regular field work and overnight travel. (required)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing. (required)
  • OSHA Construction 10hrs or 30hrs Training (preferred)
  • OSHA HAZWPOER 40hrs Training (preferred)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation, for business travel. (required)
Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified California location below. The typical base pay range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec’s total compensation package for employees.

Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Wage: $31.20/hour / Maximum Wage: $43.69/hour (Costa Mesa)
