Overview:

The Certified Substance Abuse Counselor provides a broad range of counseling services to all clients, and patients currently in, or referred to the program.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides individual counseling to the clients on his/her caseload.
  • Provides group counseling to the clients in the program or on the unit.
  • Provides case management services by assisting clients to obtain needed benefits such as SSI, Medicaid, food stamps, home relief, appropriate housing, etc.
  • Acts as an advocate and mediator in assisting the client in their contact with various service agencies and the courts, where appropriate.
  • Makes referrals on behalf of the client for vocational training, occupational and educational assistance, day treatment programs, drug programs, and other appropriate programs.
  • Participates in discussion of case reviews and planning strategies with other members of the interdisciplinary team to assist in the formulation of client treatment plans.
  • Evaluates the progress of clients in the program/unit. Provides such feedback in staff meetings.
  • Maintains for each client on his her caseload appropriate case records/medical records as stipulated by program policy.
  • Prepares and evaluations as required.
  • Conducts screenings/intakes/interviewing of new applicants, under supervision.
  • Interprets admission criteria and determines eligibility. Refers ineligible applicants to other appropriate treatment programs.
  • As a direct care provider, this position provides constant care to patients of this age group. The position is aware of aspects of pain management.
  • May have unsupervised patient contact in the course of performing their duties.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Requires a minimum formal education of High School Diploma, or GED.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Requires advanced knowledge of a specialized or technical field or a thorough knowledge of the practices and techniques of a professional field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of job-related experience.

License, and Certification Requirements:

  • Current CASAC certification required.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficiency with Office PC's, Desktops, and Laptop software in addition to familiarity with Microsoft Office softwares to include Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Good interpersonal skills a must.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position may require prolonged periods of standing, walking, talking, sitting, hearing, and bending throughout the work day.
  • May include some repetitive motions.
