The Phlebotomist is responsible for the proper collection of all specimen types on patients of all ages and in all states of health using proven techniques and appropriate collection devices to ensure safe and adequate collection.
This posting is for the following per diem, part time and full time employees of the following practice locations: Advanced Cardiology Institute, Bergen Cardiology Associates, Bergen Invasive Cardiovascular Consultants, Cardiac Medical Associates, Heartcare Center (PA), Montclair Cardiology Group, and Northern New Jersey Cardiology Associates.
Responsibilities:
A day in the life of a Phlebotomist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Collects intravenous and/or capillary blood from newborn through geriatric aged patients using proper aseptic collection techniques.
- Draws intravenous and capillary blood into proper tubes and culture vials according to the purpose for which the specimen is to be tested.
- Performs blood drawing procedures.
- Demonstrates high success rate (95%) on first venipuncture, and performs no more than two venipunctures per patient.
- Maintains work area with proper level of supplies.
- Logs refrigerator temperature daily, and informs section head if temperatures fall outside of optimal range.
- Obtains all necessary information required for a patient test to be performed and billed properly.
- Travels and performs phlebotomy duties at off-site locations for corporate and municipal health fairs, and delivers specimens to the laboratory as needed.

- Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
- Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
- Proven phlebotomy skills with patients of all ages.
- Computer literacy.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
- American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification registered or eligible.
