Church of the City New York is looking for a committed and proactive Safety Director who will provide specialized expertise to develop, implement, and oversee safety and security policies for Church of the City. As an independent contractor, the Safety Director will operate autonomously, offering services on a project-based and event-support basis, ensuring the safety and security of the church community.

The role is part-time and project-focused, providing flexibility and independence in work execution.

Contractor Status and Autonomy

To align with contractor classification:

  • The Safety Director will independently manage their schedule and determine the methods, tools, and resources needed to fulfill the deliverables outlined in the contract.
  • The role will focus on project-based tasks, with specific goals and outcomes outlined in a written agreement.
  • The contractor will supply their own equipment and software for work, excluding church-provided systems necessary for collaboration.
  • The contractor will not receive employee benefits, such as health insurance, paid time off, or retirement plans.
  • The contractor may offer their services to other organizations, provided there is no conflict of interest.

Key Responsibilities:

The Safety Director’s work will focus on key projects and event-based oversight. Deliverables include:

  1. Policy Development and Implementation
  • Develop safety protocols for emergencies (e.g., lockdowns, fire evacuation, active shooter response, medical emergencies).
  • Create a comprehensive safety handbook tailored to church locations and events.
  • Provide training materials for staff, volunteers, and external security teams.
  1. Emergency and Incident Support (Event-Specific)
  • Provide on-site leadership during specified events, including Sunday services and large gatherings.
  • Independently coordinate with external contractors and volunteers to ensure safety protocols are followed.
  1. Training and Education
  • Design and conduct independent training sessions for church staff and volunteers on emergency preparedness and safety procedures.
  1. Risk Assessment
  • Perform periodic risk assessments of church locations, offering recommendations to enhance safety measures.
  1. Weekly Reporting (Project-Based)
  • Submit concise, deliverables-focused reports on safety initiatives, completed tasks, and key findings.

Schedule and Deliverables:

The Safety Director will work on a flexible schedule, with requirements to be on-site for specific events and meetings, such as:

  • Sunday Morning: 08:30–13:30 (UWS Service Coverage)
  • Sunday Evening: 15:00–20:00 (Union Square Service Coverage)
  • Project-Based Meetings: One weekly check-in with a designated church liaison (via video call or in person).
  • Other Events: Large church-wide gatherings as outlined in the contract.

For other responsibilities, the safety director may determine their own schedule.

Requirements
  • Experience: 5–10 years of safety/security expertise (e.g., law enforcement, emergency management).
  • Skills: Exceptional organizational abilities, strong leadership during emergencies, and expertise in policy creation.
  • Independence: Must demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, meet deadlines, and provide specialized services without supervision.

Compensation:

$3,500 - $5,500 per month. Approximately 20 hours per week
