URBN Senior Data Scientist, Search & Recommender Systems
Role Summary:
URBN is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join the URBN Data Science organization which is responsible for building, deploying, and maintaining Machine Learning systems to support the URBN brands. Our expertise spans project management, machine learning, software engineering, data engineering, and analytics.Unlike most Data Science organizations, our team is a full-service Machine Learning solution provider, taking projects from ideation and requirements through deployment of production services. We work closely with the Engineering teams on a wide range of projects including an in-house personalization and search system, demand forecasting, price optimization, and warehouse optimization.
The Senior Data Scientist will have the opportunity to shape the future of our in-house search and recommender systems by bringing their creativity and expertise in machine learning to develop industry-leading solutions that will transform how our users experience our platform.
Role Responsibilities:
- ML Modeling: Build, evaluate, and help deploy machine learning models in recommender systems and search engines. Emphasis on business impact and time-to-production. Approaches span from basic regressions to advanced neural networks.
- Analysis: Support opportunities to add value to the business through application of statistical and ML techniques. Quantify the impact of those opportunities and communicate the outcome to peers and leaders.
Role Qualifications:
Desired skills and experience- Job experience training and developing recommender systems (e.g., collaborative filtering, neural networks)
- Experience in training or using embeddings and/or vector search is preferred
- Expertise in fundamental Machine Learning concepts, including: train/dev/test sets, overfitting, scoring metrics, etc.
- Strong Python experience
- ML tools (e.g. scikit learn, Jupyter Notebooks, TensorFlow, pyTorch, etc.)
- Proficient in querying databases using SQL
- Strong critical thinking and communication skills
- Experience with Cloud platforms (Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, etc.)
- Experience with Cloud infrastructure (Virtual Machines, Cloud Storage, IAM, etc.)
- Experience performing evaluations of deployed, customer-facing applications and ML models
- Data or ML orchestration frameworks (KubeFlow, MLflow, Airflow, etc.)
Education
A MS or PhD degree in Computer Science, Analytics, Data Science, Mathematics or related field with relevant job experience.
