Overview:

GDC IT Solutions is seeking a highly skilled Network Engineer for a mostly remote position based in Washington, D.C., with occasional on-site reporting requirements.

As a Network Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining both high-level and low-level network architecture to ensure that the network infrastructure supports organizational needs. You will collaborate with leadership to develop strategic plans and provide technical solutions to improve network performance and cost-effectiveness.

Additionally, you will oversee network performance, security, and operational management, while ensuring alignment with business objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategy & Planning:
  • Design and implement short- and long-term strategic plans to ensure network capacity meets current and future requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain network policies, procedures, and training plans.
  • Conduct research on emerging technologies and recommend solutions to improve network flexibility and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop and communicate plans for investing in network technologies, including cost reduction opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to develop network strategies.
  • Research and recommend products, services, protocols, and standards for network procurement and development.
  • Ensure network services meet service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Maintain documentation related to network configuration, mapping, and processes.
  • Acquisition & Deployment:
  • Plan and coordinate the installation of network devices and appliances across the organization.
  • Research and recommend network products, services, protocols, and standards.
  • Design LANs, WANs, VMs, virtual networks, and wireless networks, including routers, switches, and other devices.
  • Oversee upgrades to hardware and software.
  • Interact with vendors and contractors to secure network products and services.
  • Review network design projects and procurement plans for compliance with standards.
  • Operational Management:
  • Communicate regularly with executives, stakeholders, and department heads regarding network activities.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for upgrades and other conversions.
  • Configure networks to ensure smooth and reliable operation.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Manage end-user workstation hardware, software, and peripheral devices.
  • Ensure network connectivity for all devices and servers.
  • Manage servers, including database, email, print, and backup servers.
  • Oversee network asset management, including inventory and technical specifications.
  • Monitor and report on network performance and security solutions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in IT or Computer Science, or equivalent work experience (15 years).
  • Cisco certification in specialized areas (e.g., CCNA, CCNP).
  • 10+ years of experience in strategic network architecture design and operational excellence.
  • 10+ years of experience designing enterprise-wide LANs, WANs, WLANs, VPNs, VMs, and virtual networks.
  • Excellent knowledge of current network protocols and standards.
  • Strong knowledge of IT security requirements and experience working with information security.
  • Extensive experience with network capacity planning and management best practices.
  • Proven experience with network security principles and managing network security solutions.

Preferred Experience:

Preferred Experience
  • Expertise in WAN, LAN, and Wi-Fi technologies.
  • Experience with Lean IT concepts and ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library).
  • Knowledge of system flow charts, traffic flow, and data processing concepts.
  • Familiarity with data privacy practices and laws.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining network documentation.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
