Supervises technical and clerical personnel in specimen processing, test analysis, and reporting of results. Troubleshoots and problem solves department issues on the off shifts. May step in to perform testing as needed. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.

Responsibilities:

  • 1. Directs the management of all shifts
  • 1.1 1 1. Enforces technical and administrative policies and procedures per professional and hospital standards. 1 2.Prepares for, participates in and complies with inspections by regulatory agencies as observed by managers. 1 3. Communicates department and hospital policy in a clear and supportive manner. 1 4. Provides both positive feedback and constructive criticism to staff as required as observed by managers 1 5. Facilitates shift to shift changeover. 1 6. Assigns daily work schedule for day shift. 1 7. Maintains staffing levels to assure turnaround time targets are met. 1 8. Assures the efficient management of workflow as observed by the managers. 1 9. Oversees the generation of all test results. 1 10 . Conducts and reviews all quality control activities for all shifts. 1.11 Trains staff and conducts competency testing of all evening and night shift staff. 1 12 . Completes performance evaluations for all applicable staff with input/feedback from Managers. 1.13. Assists in the resolution, clarification, reaffirmation of results that are clinically difficult or not fitting the norm as observed by the managers 1 14 . Coordinates emergency response for laboratory during day shift.. 1 15 . Maintains laboratory safety standards on the day shift. 1 16 . Performs audits of manual entry of results.
  • 2. 2. Collaborates with management staff for departmental advancements.
  • 2.1 2 1. Recommends supply and equipment upgrades, enhancements and changes as observed by manager. 2 2. Attends and participates in monthly management and staff meetings as observed by manager. 2 3. Suggests changes to department workflow and department design. 2 4. Assists manger with procedure and policy updates. 2 5. Participates in the validation process of new tests.
  • 3. 3. Directs all problem solving activities on the evening and night shift.
  • 3.1 3 1. Works directly with clinicians to resolve issues as required as observed by managers and based on feedback from the clinicians. 3 2. Troubleshoots technical departmental problems as they occur as observed by managers. 3 3. Works to identify and resolve personnel problems. 3 4. Participates in the Quality Assurance program as required as observed by managers.
  • 4. 4. Performs all testing and related calculations
  • 4.1 4 1. Organizes workload, minimizing specimen processing delays and maximizing efficiency as observed by managers. 4 2.Responds to changes in work demands, as necessary; continually uses time to the department's advantage as observed by manager and feedback. 4 3. Analyzes specimens with accuracy and precision as observed by managers. 4 4. Performs tests within established turnaround times as observed by managers. 4.5. Completes assigned work. Acts as a member of the team, providing assistance to others, especially during shift transitions as observed by managers 4 6. Utilizes a broad laboratory base of knowledge to correlate data and reviews for unusual or unreasonable results according to established laboratory policies as observed by manager 4 7. Clearly communicates test problems and critical results to appropriate hospital personnel. 4.8. Recognizes and communicates to manager actual or potential problems in testing situations and instrumentation and takes an active part in constructive resolutions as noted by manager. 4 9. Correlates laboratory methods, procedures and patient test results with age-specific population criteria, i.e. geriatrics, adults, pediatrics and neonates. 4 10. Follows protocol for running controls, documents and accepting/verifying results according to established procedures as documented and observed by manager. 4 11. Performs test correlations, calibration verifications and linearity studies as required by regulatory agencies
  • 5. Evaluates and reports results.
  • 5.1 5.1. Demonstrates an appropriate level of understanding of scientific aspects of laboratory testing as observed by manager. 5 2. Utilizes a broad laboratory base of knowledge to correlate data and reviews for unusual or unreasonable results according to established laboratory policies as observed by manager. 5 3. Clearly communicates test problems and critical results to appropriate hospital personnel. 5.4. Recognizes and communicates to manager actual or potential problems in testing situations and instrumentation and takes an active part in constructive resolutions as noted by manager. 5 5. Correlates laboratory methods, procedures and patient test results with age-specific population criteria, i.e. geriatrics, adults, pediatrics and neonates. 5 6. Qualifications:

EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science

EXPERIENCE

5 years experience in laboratory science and a minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.

LICENSURE

ASCP or equivalent certification MLS or MT or equivalent

SPECIAL SKILLS

Proficient in office application
