UC Irvine's Department of Surgery faculty members have expertise in multiple complex diseases and are integrated to subspecialties including cancer, gastrointestinal disease, vascular diseases cardiovascular diseases, hepatobiliary disease, trauma and surgical critical care.

Responsibilities:

The Cardiovascular Institute and the Division of Cardiac Surgery at UCI Health are experiencing significant growth, offering exciting opportunities for skilled and dedicated professionals. We seek a highly competent non-operative Nurse Practitioner II to join our dynamic team in delivering exceptional patient care.

As one of the leading programs at UCI Health, our cardiac surgery division is experiencing significant growth in both volume and complexity. UCI Health is the only hospital in Orange County performing durable LVAD implants and managing complex ECMO patients, making this an exceptional environment for professional development.

Role and Responsibilities:

We are looking for candidates who are both task-oriented and independent, while also excelling in team collaboration and communication. The ideal candidate will demonstrate compassion and dedication in caring for patients recovering from cardiac surgery. Key responsibilities include:

  • Serving as primary caregiver in managing post-operative clinical pathways.
  • Coordinating care with specialists when needed and anticipating higher levels of care for
patients requiring intensive management.
  • Overseeing the primary management of cardiac surgery patients as they transition from the ICU
to discharge and follow-up.
  • Collaborating closely with attending cardiac surgeons, ICU physicians, and cardiac surgical

physician assistants (PAs) in a collegial and supportive environment.

This position reports to cardiac surgery leadership, including the Division Chief and Chair of the Cardiovascular Institute, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and best practices. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes. Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Within one year of hire, PALS.
  • Educational training and/or experience to support setting and patient population.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of ePIC, Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, Power point and Outlook).
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese
  • Previous experience managing post-op cardiac surgery patients in either NP or RN role is preferred. High quality candidates without previous experience will be considered.
