SUMMARY

The Clinical Pharmacist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care for both inpatient and outpatient services at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) as part of the National Capital Region Pain Initiative (NCRPI). This role is responsible for managing complex medication regimens, particularly for pain management, overseeing the opioid registry, and providing education to patients and staff.

The pharmacist will supervise pharmacy technicians, manage inventory control, and ensure compliance with all regulations related to controlled substances. Additionally, the Clinical Pharmacist participates in interdisciplinary meetings, contributes to medication management plans, and provides in-service training on safe medication practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Consultations: Provide pharmacy consultations for both inpatient and outpatient services, reviewing medications to ensure safety, avoiding interactions, and preventing therapeutic duplications.
  • Medication Management: Review and monitor patient medication regimens to ensure they are appropriate, effective, and safe. Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers to optimize patient care.
  • Controlled Substances Management: Oversee the management of the opioid registry and Sole Provider Program, ensuring strict adherence to protocols. Supervise the secure handling and documentation of controlled substances.
  • Pharmacy Technician Supervision: Provide clinical oversight and direction for pharmacy technicians, ensuring all pharmacy operations comply with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Compounding and Inventory Control: Compound medications as required and manage the control and inventory of pharmaceuticals. Ensure compliance with all laws and policies related to controlled substances.
  • Education and Training: Provide in-service training to medical staff on the appropriate use of pharmaceuticals, new medications, and safe medication practices. Lead monthly educational sessions for staff and patients.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians and nurses, to develop comprehensive pain management plans. Participate in regular team meetings to review and adjust treatment plans.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards and DEA regulations. Participate in audits, manage inventory, and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Expertise in Pain Management: Extensive experience managing pain-related medication regimens, including opioids.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, patients, and staff about medication use and safety.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, and other relevant software.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Doctorate in Pharmacy from an accredited institution.
  • Residency in Pharmacy or equivalent experience.
  • Active DEA Registration and CPR Certification.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Oversight of pharmacy technicians and of inventory control.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

Full-time, Monday-Friday 0600-1700

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

May be required to attend NCRPI Pain Care Skills Training (up to three days annually, outside the National Capital Region).

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Valid pharmacy license in at least one U.S. state. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration required.
