About the Position:The Sarasota County Fire Department (SCFD) is seeking motivated individuals to join the team as Firefighters. Opportunities within SCFD include marine and ladder operations, special ops, EMS bike team, honor guard, public education, and leadership roles.
SCFD responds to nearly 70,000 calls annually, serving over 335,000 residents across urban and rural areas in Sarasota County.
SCFD is an all-hazards, ALS transport agency operating from 25 fire stations. Personnel provide advanced patient care and transport to 10 hospitals, including a trauma center. Join over 500 firefighter/EMTs and firefighter/paramedics dedicated to serving Sarasota County.
Essential Job Duties:
Provide emergency response for medical, trauma, and fire incidents, using BLS and ALS techniques.Engage in fire suppression, hazardous materials response, rescue, and extrication operations.
Perform routine apparatus inspections and maintenance, ensuring all equipment is operational.
Act as essential personnel during declared emergencies.
Participate in ongoing drills, EMS and firefighter training, and public safety education.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age.High school diploma or equivalent.
State of Florida Minimum Standards Certification and EMT or Paramedic License.
Valid Florida drivers license (or must obtain within 30 days of hire).
Ability to pass pre-employment and annual NFPA 1582 physical exams.
Compliance with Chapter 633.412 F.S.
Firefighters are required to become dual certified as Firefighter/Paramedics within three years of hire, with tuition assistance available for paramedic training.

Pre-Employment Requirements:Selected candidates will undergo a pre-employment drug screening. Failure to pass will disqualify external candidates from employment with the County for five years, while internal candidates will follow County policies on positive drug tests.
Training and Work Schedule:
Training Period (First 10 Weeks): 40 hours per week with a pay rate of $28.08 per hour (including a $2.08 hourly insurance contribution).Shift Schedule: After training, Firefighters work 24-hour shifts with 48 hours off, including holidays and weekends.
Compensation:
Annual Base Pay (24/48 Schedule): $59,280 - $64,272 based on experience, including a County insurance contribution.
Hourly Pay (Post- Training): $23.75
- $25.75, with a base hourly rate of $21.67
- $23.67 plus a $2.08 hourly insurance contribution.
Additional Pay Additives:
Paramedic In Charge (PIC): $17,000 annuallyPIC Field Training Certification: $18,500 annually
Lead PIC on ALS Units: $2.00/hour (Transport), $1.00/hour (Non-Transport)
Hydraulic Maintenance Technician (HMT): $1,922 annually
Special Operations: $2,221 - $4,742 annually
Ladder Truck Seat Pay: $1.00/hour
Special Ops and Marine Ops Seat Pay: $2.00/hour and $1.00/hour respectively
