Position Overview:

The City of Oakland is seeking applicants for the position of Police Officer Trainee. After successfully completing the academy, Police Officers receive annual step increases and may reach the top step after five years. The benefits package includes city-paid health and dental insurance, a pension through the California Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS), vacation and sick leave, holidays, education tuition reimbursement, life insurance, an employee assistance program, and a deferred compensation plan.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Diploma from an accredited U.S. high school or G.E.D. certificate.
Age: Must be 21 years of age upon graduation from the academy.
Driver's License: Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Criminal Record: No felony convictions or other misdemeanor convictions that would prevent carrying a firearm.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident who has applied for U.S. citizenship.

Application and Selection Procedures:

Submit Application:

Candidates must submit their application online by the closing date. Computer stations are available at any City of Oakland Public Library for those who need access. It is important to keep contact information up to date.

Self-Schedule Written Exam:

Candidates must complete the National Testing Network (NTN) written exam by September 13, 2024. The exam can be taken virtually or in person. Scores must be submitted by the deadline.

Physical Ability Test: The OPD Physical Ability Test is scheduled for September 28, 2024, at Merritt College in Oakland.

Oral Exam:

Candidates who pass the Physical Ability Test will be invited to an Oral Exam on the same day. This exam evaluates job-related skills such as communication, interpersonal skills, and judgment. Successful candidates will be placed on a ranked eligibility list.

Background Investigation and Chief's Review:

Selected candidates will undergo a background investigation and, if successful, will be reviewed by the Chief's Character Review Panel. Those approved will receive a conditional job offer, pending the results of a medical and psychological examination.

Supplemental Information:

Candidates who have previously taken the NTN or PELLETB written exams and wish to waive the written portion of the exam must submit their scores by September 13, 2024.

Candidates who have completed the Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) and wish to waive the physical test portion must submit the official verification letter by the deadline.

Additional Information:

Oakland Residency and Veteran's Preference Points:

Candidates claiming residency preference must provide proof of Oakland residency. Veterans claiming preference points must submit a copy of Form DD-214.

Selective Certification:

Some positions may require specific bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin. Candidates for these positions must demonstrate the required skill to be certified.

Fee Waiver:

Candidates experiencing financial hardship may request a fee waiver for the NTN exam. Requests must be submitted by September 13, 2024.
