Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (Concussion)

Overview:

This position is for 20 hours per week. Full day at Columbia location on Tuesdays then the remainder of the time will cover clinic in Baltimore and administrative time.

The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner I functions as a healthcare provider, working collaboratively within a
multidisciplinary health team, responsible for providing comprehensive care to both well and/or ill
patients. This position educates patients and/or intervenes in acute or chronic illness, and practices within
department and Kennedy Krieger Institute guidelines in accordance with State of Maryland Nurse
Practitioner Regulations. The incumbent will adhere to the Nurse Practice Act and all rules governing
certification for their scope of practice. This position is credentialed and granted specified professional

staff privileges by the Kennedy Krieger Institute Medical Staff

Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessment of patients/families with real, potential, acute,
and/or chronic health problems, which may include the psychosocial, cognitive, and personal assets
and limitations of the patient/family with an emphasis on wellness.
  1. Performs health screening; orders, performs, and interprets tests. Establishes medical and nursing
diagnosis; orders and evaluates diagnostic studies; performs and monitors therapeutic procedures; assesses and/or manages follow-up plans.
  1. Assesses chronic health problems and refers to attending or primary provider when appropriate.
Collaborates with other professionals in developing and implementing a plan of care for child or
adolescent.
  1. Prescribes and regulates medications.
  2. Provides comprehensive documentation of all patient evaluations and services.
  3. Assumes responsibility and accountability for time management, professional relationships, and
interpersonal interactions.
  1. Provides health education to caregivers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team concerning
medications, management of illness, and disease prevention. Teaches children/adolescents about good
heath practices.
  1. Treats acute minor illness such as otitis media and upper respiratory infections.
  2. Develops, conducts, and/or evaluates formal or informal in-service and continuing education programs
in area(s) of expertise for peer group and other disciplines.
  1. Participates in the research process as evidenced by: a) enhancing the quality and clinical relevance of
nursing research by promoting expertise in clinical problems and by providing knowledge about the
way in which these clinical services are delivered; b) assisting others in applying scientific knowledge
in nursing practice.
  1. Participates on department, functional unit, and hospital committees as assigned.
  2. Serve as a clinical preceptor for nursing students including nurse practitioner candidates.
  3. Advocates for children and adolescents with developmental disability within health, community, and
school arenas.
  1. Participates in the development and implementation of a quality assurance program

Qualifications:

  • Registered nurse licensure and certification as a nurse practitioner required by the State of Maryland
required.
  • National certification in area of specialty from national certifying board, such as the American Nurses
Credentialing Center and the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, required.
  • Individual must demonstrate competence across all age groups due to the diversity of the children
and adults served by Kennedy Krieger Institute.
  • Clinical care focus is on the pediatric and adolescent population.
  • EDUCATION:
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Completion of a nurse practitioner program approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing required.
  • EXPERIENCE

Two years of related clinical nursing experience required.
