Histocompatibility Medical Laboratory Scientist II, 1st Shift

Overview:

Performs a wide range of technical procedures analyzing blood and various body fluids in order to expedite the physician’s diagnosis and treatment of his patient. Records and documents this data in the proper areas. The employee shall assist with quality audits in accordance with accrediting agencies.
Technical duties will include routine patient testing and STAT testing. Technical competency and critical thinking are required, as errors could result in serious consequences to patients. Work involves confidential patient diagnosis and test results, requiring the employee to respect the patient’s right to confidentiality.

The technologist shall have good communication skills and interact pleasantly and professionally with all co-workers, medical staff, patients, visitors, and others. The employee shall actively support the policies of the Laboratory and organization

Responsibilities:

  1. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, acceptability, processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test result according to departmental SOPs.
  2. Follow department’s procedure in reporting STATS or critical results to providers.
  3. Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
  4. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  5. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and all maintenance performed.
  6. Make sure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and if applicable opened dates.
  7. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  8. Follow accrediting agency standards CAP, AABB, FDA, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines.
  9. Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  10. Participate in all applicable safety training sessions. Know the location and contents of the safety manual. Know the location/use of all applicable safety equipment.
  11. Perform employee training, instrument maintenance, function checks and direct observation to determine competency.
  12. Provides teaching and education to clinical laboratory scientist students and other laboratory or hospital personnel.
  13. Successfully completes department specific competencies.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (example, laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, hematology, clinical microscopy, cytogenetics, blood bank, molecular biology, cytotechnology, or immunology. (required)

Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) year of lab experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (preferred)

Certification:

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by one of the following accrediting agencies is required.
  • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the Department of Health, Education & Welfare/US Department of Health & Human Services (HEW/HHS)
  • Technologist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in one of the following areas:
Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Cytology
  • Technologist certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) in one of the following areas:

Medical Technologist, Andrology Laboratory Scientist, Embryology Laboratory Scientist, or Molecular Diagnostics Technologist

Additional Certification by one of the following accrediting agencies is preferred:

  • Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) certified by American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics
  • Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) certified by American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics

Beginning in January 2004, newly certified individuals must participate in The American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry (BOR) Certification Maintenance Program (required)
