Job Summary
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care by providing intensive respiratory therapy and supporting patient transport as prescribed. Working under minimal supervision and within the scope of a professional license, this role involves evaluating patients, creating tailored treatment plans, and ensuring effective respiratory therapy outcomes.
Key Responsibilities- Patient Assessment & Treatment:
- Conduct thorough evaluations and recommend appropriate respiratory treatment plans.
- Explain treatments, tests, and equipment use to patients, ensuring understanding, especially before discharge.
- Therapeutic Procedures & Equipment Use:
- Administer physician-prescribed respiratory treatments using ventilatory equipment (both invasive and non-invasive), various oxygen, aerosol devices, and nebulizers.
- Perform chest physiotherapy, secretion clearance, and suctioning (oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal) as needed.
- Operate monitoring systems like oximetry and capnography per hospital policy.
- Diagnostics & Monitoring:
- Review chest x-rays and perform 12-Lead EKGs and basic arrhythmia recognition.
- Conduct pulmonary function studies, such as NIF and VC, according to protocol.
- Assisting with Procedures:
- Provide assistance in respiratory care procedures, including bronchoscopy, chest tube placement, and percutaneous tracheostomy care.
- Perform tracheostomy care, including the insertion and removal of tracheostomy tubes as required.
- Carry out arterial punctures, assessing ventilation effectiveness.
- Laboratory Testing:
- In moderate complexity labs, follow all protocols related to lab testing, specimen handling, equipment use, and documentation in alignment with quality control standards.
- Emergency Response & Equipment Management:
- Execute cardiopulmonary resuscitation in line with BLS and ACLS guidelines.
- Insert and remove endotracheal tubes using free-hand techniques or video laryngoscopy.
- Set up, maintain, and monitor mechanical ventilation equipment, ensuring optimal operation.
- Documentation & Communication:
- Document all treatment details and patient responses in records and charts, including pre- and post-assessments.
- Communicate treatment efficiency with attending and pulmonary physicians.
- Participate in shift-to-shift handoffs, providing concise patient status updates.
- Ensure accurate respiratory therapy charges and resolve data entry errors as needed.
- Additional Duties:
- Facilitate preventative maintenance and repairs for respiratory equipment.
- Complete other assigned tasks related to patient care and respiratory therapy.
Qualifications:
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
- Skills: Proficiency in respiratory therapy equipment, strong patient communication, and commitment to patient safety and care.
