Responsibilities

New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBCe) is one of the largest nonprofit, independent, community blood centers in the world.

Through corporate and institutional collaboration and funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, NYBCe was incorporated in 1959 and opened its doors in Manhattan in 1964 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation to provide its community with the highest-quality transfusion and related products and services.

Today, NYBCe collects and distributes human blood, conducts basic and applied research, and provides public and professional educational activities in the field of transfusion medicine.

NYBCe serves as a vital community lifeline dedicated to helping patients and advancing global public health through its four-part mission:

  1. To provide the highest quality blood and stem cell products and related medical and consultative services to hospitals and patients.
  2. To conduct the highest quality, novel, and innovative research in the fields of hematology, blood banking and transfusion medicine, and cellular therapies, thus advancing these fields and positively impacting the public health.
  3. To develop products, technologies, and services in the fields of hematology, blood banking, transfusion medicine, and cellular therapies with the potential to have worldwide humanitarian impact.
  4. To train the next generation of leaders in each of these fields.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Senior Vice President (SVP) will function as the top executive leader of Enterprise Laboratory Services and will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations, developing strategy, implementing business plans, managing the departments P&L (including revenue and operating margins), developing budgets and financial plans, and fostering a high-performance, customer-oriented culture.

The SVP-ELS will be a key member of the senior leadership team and will work cross-functionally to identify growth opportunities, new revenue sources, best practices for productivity enhancements, areas for consolidation and streamlining, and drivers for sustainability.

Enterprise Laboratory Services (ELS) are a critical part of NYBCes operations delivering component manufacturing and testing for our products. In addition to supporting our own products, ELS generate revenue by offering specialized testing services to external organizations, including to many of our hospital customers for blood products.

Laboratory Services also has a key role in the continuing education of our transfusion service partners, transfusion service fellows and our employees.

The SVP-ELS is responsible for developing and implementing the strategic plan for the laboratories including creating new products and processes with a vision for the future. Will identify emerging trends and technologies and industry best practices to inform strategic decision making.

The SVP-ELS is or must become an expert, advocate, and industry influencer in the field.

The SVP-ELS is responsible for all clinical laboratories and associated support services in the enterprise in all divisions, including Infectious Disease Testing (IDT) laboratories, Immunohematology Reference laboratories (IRLs), Genomics laboratories, specialty laboratories, including HLA, and Quality Control Laboratories.

In addition, the role is responsible for the blood components manufacturing laboratories working closely with production planning to meet specific product needs.

The SVP-ELS will partner with executives across all affiliates and business lines to understand their objectives and challenges while ensuring efforts, targeted strategies and initiatives are aligned with those of the Enterprise.
  • Oversees all NYBCe and affiliates laboratories. Ensures efficient production, technical excellence and quality and regulatory compliant laboratory services to deliver high quality clinical testing services and products.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the divisional laboratory leadership staff, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • In partnership with NYBCe and Affiliates Senior Leadership execute comprehensive business, operational, and project support to ensure effective execution on all Laboratory Operations strategies including building roadmaps, identifying process and technology requirements, and defining milestones to achieve optimal success.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for the clinical laboratories, aligning with the overall organizational goals.
  • Drive innovation within the laboratories and explore opportunities for the development or implementation of new technologies and methodologies to enhance testing and manufacturing capabilities and efficiencies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate laboratory operations seamlessly into broader organizational strategies.
  • Work in close collaboration with NYBCe Laboratory Directors/CMO and QRA to ensure lab operations practices, policies and procedures are in compliance with regulatory standards while maintaining the highest level of quality and accuracy.
  • Stays abreast of regulatory changes and industry standards ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines.
  • Maintains open communication with the SVP/COO to understand their emerging needs, as well as their current requirements and key local initiatives while executing enterprise-wide Blood and Testing initiatives.
  • Develops and executes a cross function plan with enterprise-wide SVP/COO to integrate and upgrade the customer experience from intake and client service through production and results reporting and data communication.
  • Communicates regularly and effectively with other leadership in the company including laboratory management, staff, department heads, and other key interface staff members.
  • Develop enterprise wide KPI metrics to ensure that customer experience, lab operations effectiveness and efficiencies are benchmarked to industry standards.
  • Ensures collaboration and commitment between Laboratory Operations and other departments (Quality, Medical, CSR, Finance, Ventures, CCS) to meet internal and external customer expectations.
  • Supports the offering of continuing education to our Transfusion Services Community.
  • Develops and monitors departmental budget including setting and meeting these targets.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement efficient processes to maximize financial performance

Qualifications

Education:

B.S./M.S./PhD in Medical Technology or Applied Science, or M.D. with background in transfusion medicine, medical laboratory, or related specialty. An assorted business degree (MBA, MPA, MHA or equivalent) is highly desirable.

Experience:

Ten (10) years of blood banking or comprehensive laboratory experience, with five years at managerial level.

Relevant published research in peer reviewed journals is highly desirable.

Licenses / Certifications:

NYS Lab Technologist preferred.

MT (ASCP) certification preferred.

Travel:

Ability to travel as needed (estimated 15-25%)

Knowledge:

Strong knowledge of GMP compliance and quality

Strong knowledge of CLIA and State DOH

Strong knowledge of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Working knowledge of Collective Bargaining Agreements preferred

Skills & Abilities:

Demonstrated operations and process leadership experience across multiple functional areas with a history of successful strategic planning and execution.

Ability to lead in a matrix structure to achieve business goals; demonstrated financial acumen and experience developing and operating a capital budget.

Proven ability to interact with multiple levels of leadership both internally and externally, and influence peers and senior management.
