Overview:

Joby Aviation is seeking its first of a kind Fleet Reliability Engineer to support the operational excellence of Joby Aviation’s eVTOL fleet. As a Fleet Reliability Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of our aircraft fleet.

This role involves monitoring fleet performance, analyzing data to identify trends, and driving solutions that enhance reliability and availability.

The ideal candidate will work seamlessly across engineering, maintenance, and operations teams, driving a proactive and innovative approach to fleet reliability.

Location: 2-3 days in Marina, CA to collaborate with the Flight Test, Operations and Maintenance team, other days flexible between Santa Cruz or San Carlos locations.

Responsibilities:

  • Fleet Performance Monitoring:
  • Analyze operational data to track and report on key reliability metrics, including dispatch reliability, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance events, service and inspection intervals and component performance trends based on Flight Test or Flight operations.
  • Collects data from maintenance and engineering systems and performs statistical analysis to monitor, evaluate and provide solution to the operational and technical performance
  • Develop dashboards and visualizations to communicate fleet health effectively in Engineering and Maintenance Programs, Maintenance, Materials, Quality Control and Assurance, Flight Operations, and In-Flight
  • Reliability Analysis and Reporting:
  • Analyzes technical data from aircraft maintenance log, aircraft service records, health monitoring and aircraft data to determine root cause, failure mode/trends and provide a solution to enhanced aircraft performance.
  • Support and conduct root cause analyses for failures and implement corrective actions observed in component, module, system and aircraft level testing.
  • Prepare and present periodic reliability reports to stakeholders, highlighting trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Analyzes aircraft reliability data and implements corrective actions through engineering modifications and repair documentation to support achieving aircraft technical dispatch reliability targets.
  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and supply chain teams to improve reliability through design modifications, procedural updates, or improved training.
  • Partner with design teams to provide feedback from field data to inform future designs.
  • Predictive Maintenance:
  • Support the development and implementation of predictive maintenance strategies using advanced analytics and machine learning.
  • Identify failure patterns and recommend predictive indicators.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
  • Ensure that all reliability efforts comply with FAA regulations and other applicable aviation standards.
  • Maintain documentation and records to support airworthiness certification and reporting.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  • Act as a liaison between operations and engineering teams, ensuring alignment on reliability goals.
  • Support field maintenance teams with technical guidance during challenging situations.

Required:

  • B. S. in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or relevant discipline with 7+ years of work experience in a relevant industry performing reliability and root cause failure analysis, field data analysis,
  • Demonstrates expertise in and hands-on experience with critical aviation programs and processes, including Maintenance Programs, Reliability Continuing Analysis Surveillance Systems (CASS), and Maintenance, Inspection, and Engineering Operations, ensuring seamless integration and operational excellence.
  • Experience in Python, Databrick SQL or PowerBI coding and reporting are necessary
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills. Imparting influence with people- and technical skills will be a key trait for success in this role.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a strong analytical background and high attention to detail.
  • Prior experience performing DfR activities for energetic storage systems and propulsion technology.

Desired:

  • Prior experience in aircraft reliability and maintenance matrix development
  • Prior experience in troubleshooting hardware issues; escalate and coordinate as needed with design, reliability, flight test, and maintenance teams to drive resolution.
  • Strong fundamentals in monitoring and analyzing, equipment and system performance and take appropriate remediation actions
  • Reliability statistics – Weibull statistics, sample size estimation, etc.
  • Fundamental knowledge of actuators, motors, inverters, pumps and batteries.
  • Knowledge of key standards used in reliability engineering, such as MIL, JEDEC, IPC & IEC.
  • Knowledge of failure analysis (nondestructive) of electronics hardware and High Voltage equipment, to support root cause analysis.

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $128,600 - $207,000 yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
