R&D Scientist 1
R&D Scientist - Carlstadt, NJ
The R&D Scientist is part of a team with the mission to create new material options for inks/coatings and provide sustainable links between fundamental chemical phenomena and related materials properties to predict product performance. The scientist will conduct experimentation in material development and analysis of characteristic material properties. The scientist/engineer will use chemical and process modeling to develop fundamental relationships for connecting material characteristics to product performance.
Responsibilities:- Scouts for new material concepts for suitability via literature, patents, etc. to develop approaches that can be used in current and future products.
- Ability to develop internal and external synthetic options for new materials to create prototypes for feasibility (polymers, composites, sol-gels, etc.
- Relate the structures and chemical properties of polymers (including use of chemical modeling) and/or composite materials to define links to critical to quality performance factors.
- Takes an engineering view (including process modeling) of printing processes to define the proper material attributes that need to be managed in material design.
- Develop and monitor process conditions during the development of new materials that provide for understanding of process dynamics as well as control and reproducibility of key materials parameters.
- Use proper statistical tools in assessing the boundaries or limits of analytical measures.
- Documents assigned projects and hours in Sun GPM
- Summarizes data in reports and/or presentations at regular intervals. Documents experimental work in a lab notebook using established best practices.
- Ensures all ISO requirements are met and produces the necessary documentation to maintain compliance.
- Follows Chemical Hygiene plan and looks for safety improvements.
- Minimum requirement is Masters; Ph.D. preferred in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or other physical science disciplines.
- 2-5 years of industrial experience with material development related to chemical products.
- Knowledge of Material Characterization and benchmarking (e.g. Thermal Analysis, Rheology, Colloid/Interface Science)
- Knowledge of Material Product/Process Development (e.g. Polymerization Techniques, Composites, Sol-Gel, Hybrids)
- Able to link material properties to performance prediction (e.g. adhesion, surface properties)
- Knowledge of Chemical and Process Modeling (e.g. Molecular and Process Simulation)
- Able to carry out proper analytical and material property testing
- Relate characteristic material properties to relationship to critical to quality parameters
- Motivated to explore new concepts, techniques and practices
- Rigorously follows EH&S and laboratory procedures
- Excellent interpersonal relationship skills
- Good writing, reporting and presentation skills
- Ability to work successfully with several developmental and support teams to accomplish goals
- Excellent analytical / problem solving skills
