VP Commercial & Ag Underwriting Manager
Overview:
The VP Commercial & Ag Underwriting Manager is responsible for the overall review and supervision of the loan underwriting function of the bank. Responsible for overall soundness and management of the Bank’s commercial & ag loan portfolio. This role will oversee the Commercial/Ag Underwriters and assist the Commercial & Ag Staff in the retention and expansion of existing client relationships, all while providing excellent client service to our internal and external clients.This responsibility would involve the underwriting function from the point of receiving a complete application through credit analysis, approval, and hand-off for loan documentation.
Interrelated responsibilities include, but not limited to, supervision and training of personnel, audit and compliance review, system maintenance, and preparation and monitoring of pertinent reports.
Responsibilities:
Supervision of Staff:
- Mentor and coach loan underwriting staff while challenging them to look for opportunities to increase efficiencies and utilization of technology.
- Ensure day-to-day workflow within the underwriting area is completed appropriately and efficiently by staff.
- Attend pertinent seminars and educational training programs. Provide condensed presentation and training for appropriate staff.
- Function as a role model to staff through appropriate behaviors and professional demeanor.
- Guide staff towards future personal goals through ongoing meetings, 1:1’s and performance reviews. Keep accurate personnel files.
- Monitor attendance by approving vacation, sick and personal time off along with ensuring staff are working appropriate hours each week.
Commercial & Ag Loan Portfolio Management:
- Responsible for credit risk and quality of the loan portfolio by providing direct reports with the proper tools and authority to execute their assigned functions.
- On a monthly or quarterly basis assist the CCO with providing various reports for the Credit Administration department and senior management. Reports could include portfolio concentration reports, pipeline reports, and other portfolio monitoring reports, as necessary.
- Assist Business Relationship Managers and Commercial & Ag Underwriters with identifying trends in client activities and economic indicators which may be predictive of deteriorating credit quality. Recommend further action to Relationship Managers and Credit Risk team, as necessary.
- Collaborate with CCO to establish and update Loan Underwriting Department policies and operating procedures that are consistent with overall loan policy and create an efficient department. Work within the department and outside the department to ensure processes and procedures are followed, maintained and updated as needed to ensure overall loan department efficiencies. Work with CCO on loan policy changes as necessary.
- Assist in oversight of Sageworks modules. Assist in keeping all systems changes/enhancements up to date and communicate them to appropriate staff.
- Administer training programs in the loan underwriting department that will enhance bank policies and procedures and ensure compliance with lending regulations.
- Monitor compliance with loan policy and appropriate compliance regulations.
- Serve as a backup to Commercial and Ag Underwriting department as needed.
- Provide support to Loan Underwriting Staff and attend Supervisors meetings on a regular basis.
Management of the New and Renewal Loan Process:
- Develop, train, and manage commercial processes and procedures for all Commercial & Ag Staff as appropriate.
- Run New and Renewal pipeline reports and monitor timely completion of loan requests and renewals – keeping administrative past dues low or non-existent.
- Review loan proposals completed by Commercial & Ag Underwriters for accuracy and provide assistance/training as needed prior to approval.
- Collaborate with CCO, CLO, Business Banking Teamleads, and Relationship Managers to develop efficiencies, and process to improve client experience.

- Actively participate in Bank and Department meetings.
- Perform all other duties as assigned or requested.
- Provide ongoing guidance to other departments.
Other Responsibilities:
- Complete all annual bank security and compliance training.
- Adhere to Bank Security guidelines as required for this position.
- Always maintain confidentiality of client information
- Stay current on all compliance regulations.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business and/or similar field of education and/or 5-8 years previous work experience in a lending environment
- Previous experience in commercial and/or ag loan underwriting
- Strong knowledge of cash flow, credit and collateral analysis
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills (verbal & written) in order to communicate and relate effectively with clients and associates.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to work efficiently & accurately.
- Demonstrated ability in exercising independent judgment.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and remain calm while working in a fast paced/deadline driven environment.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, proficient typing/keyboarding skills and the ability and willingness to learn new programs and software.
- Ability to meet deadlines in a face-paced production environment.
- Ability to maintain confidential client information.
- Ability to read, write, understand, and speak English clearly.
- Ability to represent the organization in a professional, positive manner.
This is a full time role between the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Flexibility in scheduling may be needed on occasion.
