Overview:

Provide a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff in the Behavioral Health service line and to assist in providing direct patient care to individuals with behavioral/emotional/mental health problems as delegated by the nurse and/or physician.

Qualifications:
License/Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA); Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Training within 3 months - Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI)

Education: H.S. Diploma/GED

Other Knowledge/Skills: Behavioral health

Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the RN provides indirect care that supports the Emergency Department mission by:

  • PARTICIPATION:
  • in cost containment
  • development/maintenance of positive work environment
  • minimizing overtime
  • attending required classes and meetings
  • participating in unit committees
  • adheres to all policies and procedures
  • serves as a point of entry for the Behavioral Health Service Line
  • ensures patients are treated with dignity and respect
  • PROMOTING PATIENT SAFETY:
  • Answers call lights in a timely manner
  • applies protective devices correctly
  • anticipates patient request, makes rounds every hour as a minimum
  • assists RN in planning patient care
  • maintains a safe unit environment
  • Acts as a patient advocate
  • Recognizes and reports abuse/neglect situations as required by law
  • PROMOTING INFECTION CONTROL:
  • washes hands before and after patient contact
  • handles soiled linen, equipment and instruments per protocol
  • maintains sterile asepsis
  • maintains isolation technique
  • PROMOTING PERSONAL SAFETY:
  • utilizes p.p.e. appropriately
  • keeps hallways clear of furniture/equipment, everything on one side
  • PROVIDES DAILY INVENTORY MAINTENANCE:
  • maintains support areas (kitchen, nurses’ station, utility rooms) clean/stocked
  • restocks equipment in patient care areas
  • accountable for pertinent patient care equipment
  • completes appropriate work form for maintenance and clinical engineering service, equipment work orders, including removing from service

Provides direct patient care that demonstrates our mission and values. Evidenced by:

  • PROVIDES CARE AS DIRECTED:
  • Provides support, sets limits, and/or facilitates learning from the situation if/when providing direct patient care
  • Perform pulse oximetry
  • performs and documents selected diagnostic tests – phlebotomy & 12-lead ECG recording
  • performs lab testing as appropriate
  • provides care for the patient requiring restraint or seclusion
  • Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.
  • Performs patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and hospital lab procedures/policies.

  • Demonstrates a practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues.

  • PROVIDES OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT OF PATIENT INFORMATION PER POLICY:
  • temperatures - oral, rectal (axillary only under the direction of RN)
  • Pulse - apical and radial,
  • Blood pressure,
  • height and weight,
  • intake and output,
  • pain ratings
  • PROMOTION OF PATIENT WELLNESS:
  • maintain a pleasant environment for patients by keeping rooms visually clean and uncluttered
  • participates in admission, transport and discharge of patients
  • assist patients with -in-bed mobility; transfers to/from bed, WC, stretcher, or chair; positioning for alignment and comfort
  • ASSIST PATIENTS WITH NUTRITION MANAGEMENT:
  • prepares patients for meals by offering washing of hands, mouth care and positioning in chair or bed before meal tray arrives
  • delivers trays
  • documents intake per policy
  • feeds dependent patients as needed
  • provides fresh water, ice and snacks.
  • PROVIDES ASSISTANCE WITH ELIMINATION PROCEDURES:
  • offers/removes bedpans and urinals
  • collect specimens for ordered tests
  • catheterize female and male patients as needed
  • communicates any intake and output
THERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY FOCUS: Assists in the creation and maintenance of a safe, caring, nurturing, healing, and educative environment.
  • Ensures patient, visitor and staff safety by following policies/procedures and adhering to the National Patient Safety Goals
  • Sets behavioral limits on patients according to hospital and ED policies
  • De-escalates patients utilizing CPI techniques
  • Takes initiative in making decisions and taking immediate action to ensure safety
  • Participates in application of seclusion/restraints when appropriate; provides monitoring of patients in such situations; completes appropriate documentation, including restriction of rights forms
  • Participates in patient and staff debriefing
  • Interfaces effectively with Behavioral Health, ED and Security staff to promote a safe environment; calls for additional assistance if needed
  • Provides supportive care to patients and families when appropriate
  • Continuously monitors video/audio equipment to ensure patient, visitor and staff safety, and/or makes “rounds” in the immediate patient care area
  • Completes electronic event reports as indicated
