Position Summary

In collaboration with the Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology, the Administrator, and the Chief Therapist and the Director
of Physics, plan for the proper allocation of Department resources, including equipment usage, selection and replacement; staffing

requirements, assignment and recruitment; budget preparation; program operation and continuing review of policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

Administrative
  • Collaborates with the Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology, the Administrator, the Chief Therapist and the

Director of Physics, plan for the proper allocation of Department resources, including equipment usage, selection and

replacement; staffing requirements, assignment and recruitment; budget preparation; program operation and continuing
review of policies and procedures.
o Requests purchase of equipment, supplies etc. as required for the routine operation of the Department.
o Develops and administers a comprehensive maintenance program for all major equipment within the Department.
o Develops and administers a comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA) program for all treatment modalities, localization procedures and computational equipment and programs sufficient to assure the accurate delivery of
prescribed dose to patients.
  • Collaborates with the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to develop and administer a comprehensive radiation safety program in
compliance with relevant State of Florida Department of Health rules and regulations and licenses, including a personnel
radiation monitoring program.
  • Supervises physics residents, dosimetrists and radiation therapists.
  • Monitors the performance of the therapy staff and treatment areas and provides the necessary equipment and support to
assure the accurate delivery of patient treatments.
Consultative
  • Develops performance, acceptance testing and commissioning specifications for all newly acquired equipment. Approve for
clinical use. Review staff training and competency. Calculate, or review, and certify for use all shielding for new or modified
radiation areas.
  • Collaborates with the Radiation Oncologist and/or physics and/or dosimetry staff on individual patient treatment plans using
all appropriate treatment modalities available within the Department of Radiation Oncology.
  • Develops, reviews, and approves for clinical use new or non-standard treatment techniques.
  • Provides statistical analysis for evaluation of treatment efficacy when requested.
  • Reviews and approves for use all necessary charts and tables for all treatment units to enable the accurate calculation of
patient treatments.
  • Evaluates and approves for use new or improved treatment aids applicators or instruments.
  • Researches and evaluates new developments in the field of Radiation Oncology to assess the need for and acquisition of new
or improved equipment for simulation, planning or treatment.
Treatment Planning
  • Evaluates all treatment machine specific data required for accurate calculation of patient treatments. Verify accuracy of
computer calculations and approve for clinical use. Review regularly and update as required in accordance with established
QA program.
  • Reviews and approves for clinical use all new and special treatment procedures. Periodically review current treatment
procedures and update as required. Initiate and periodically review a written procedure manual for standard calculation
techniques.
  • Calculates or reviews and approve for submission benchmark calculations and studies done for formal clinical trials and
protocols. Review before treatment protocol patients and review the documentation of their treatment before submission.
Maintenance and Quality Assurance (QA)
  • Reviews periodically QA records of all radiation producing equipment to assure its proper function and to identify possible
trends or impending breakdowns.Performs or reviews regular calibrations and routine QA checks on all radiation producing equipment. Perform and evaluate
annual calibration of all radiation producing equipment and maintain appropriate records. Update treatment planning computer systems, charts and tables as appropriate.
  • Reviews results of test procedures for computer software updates and approve for clinical use.
  • Supervises the maintenance of the radioactive materials storage area. Supervise the preparation and handling of radioactive
material for patient treatment and maintain appropriate records.
  • Develops, implements and periodically reviews the in-vivo dosimetry program.
  • Develops and administers a comprehensive program of maintenance and calibration of instrumentation used for the calibration of radiation sources (linear accelerator, HDR, etc.), measurement of radiation dose and monitoring of patient and
staff exposure.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
  • Reviews records of radioactive material use periodically.
  • Assists the Radiation Safety Officer with the Quality Management Program and annually review and update, as required
departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participates in weekly chart review for patients under treatment.
  • Assures compliance within the Department with all applicable rules and regulations as set forth by the Florida Department of Health
in Chapter 64E-5, Florida Administrative Code (FAC). Write all license applications and amendments to be filed by the appropriate
Corporate Officer. Cooperate with State and Federal inspecting agencies.
  • Collaborates with Department Heads and representatives of ancillary departments and services and vendors to assure the efficient
operation of the Department and effective patient treatment.
  • Participates in corporate wide training, continuing education and committees to assure compliance with Corporate and Department
policies and regulatory agencies.
  • Provides continuing education training for radiation and ancillary staff as required.Reviews records of radioactive material use periodically.
  • Assists the Radiation Safety Officer with the Quality Management Program and annually review and update, as required

Qualifications:

Education/Training

Master’s degree and three (3) years full time clinical experience.

Licensure/Certification
 Maintain current license in the State of Florida as a Therapeutic Radiological Physicist.
 Maintain current certification as a Therapeutic Radiologic Physicist (ABR TRP) by the American Board of Radiology.

 Certifications received prior to 2002 are not time limited.

Experience

Three (3) years clinical experience.
