Lutheran Haven is seeking a Cook to join our team. The Cook's primary responsibility is to perform the functions of the Dietary Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations governing our facility.
In this role, one can expect to prepare, season, and cook a wide range of foods such as soups, snacks, salads, entrees, side dishes, and desserts in accordance with production and instruction sheets, standardized recipes, preparation methods, and portion controls.
May be directed by the Dietary Director, Dietitian, Production Manager, and/or the Administrator.
Job Duties:
- Actively supports Lutheran Haven’s Mission and Ministry.
- Demonstrates a willingness to be an effective team member by fostering positive relationships with teams and residents.
- Prepare all hot/cold food items on the menus according to the corresponding recipes and in appropriate quantities.
- Direct the activities of employees who assist in preparing and serving meals.
- Prepare all therapeutic and/or mechanically altered diets according to the diet spread sheets.
- Record any and all food substitutions.
- Supervise and instruct all kitchen workers concerned with food preparations and service in the absence of the Production or Dietary Manager.
- Make sure all food items are labeled and dated.
- Maintain standards of sanitation and housekeeping by daily completing cleaning tasks as outlined on the Cleaning Checklist
- Maintain standards of food preparation by the use of standardized recipes, proper cooking methods, and portion control.
- Check the Week at a Glance and Recipe Books for items needed for upcoming menus. Inform Dietary Director or Production Manager of items that need to be ordered.
- Attend in-service training sessions as scheduled.
- Attend in-services within the department to keep current on nutrition and dietary changes.
- Work with other team and staff members on special events.
- May assist with food service as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED; or one to three months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of residents or employees is required.
- Must be able to sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Basic math skills required for measuring and preparing foods.
- Demonstrate attention to detail.
- Must meet deadlines for food preparation as directed by Dietary Director or Production Manager.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions, to follow instructions, and to accept constructive criticism.
- Must possess the ability to effectively interact with employees, residents, family members, visitors, and the general public.
- Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, and elderly people.
- Honor Resident’s Rights policies at all times.
- Maintain confidentiality of all resident information according to HIPAA policies and procedures.
- Be expected (and required) to perform any task in a safe, sanitary and efficient manner in accordance with established procedures.
- Be familiar with universal precautions.
